need Luggage/traveling advice!

2010 Mazda5
We just bought a 2010 m5 and we are planning a snowboarding trip from Tulsa Oklahoma to Colorado. We will have 4 adults and a carseat. So u do the math, that leaves 1 back seat empty to fold down for luggage, we plan on packing light but I think we might need more room? Should I get a roof rack and cargo box? Would a snowboard fit inside somehow, maybe along the side between the sliding door and seat? We are just bringing one snowboard.
Any advice or knowledge about roof racks and mpg would be appreciate too. Does it make a huge difference in mpg because of the drag? Thanks!

Sounds like you're going to need the rest of the available inside space for luggage! Just grab a roof rack and throw the board up there... yes it will impact MPG a little, but not much, maybe 1 or 2 MPG, just remove it after the trip. Definitely more worthwhile to leave the space available inside the vehicle... you'll be more comfortable.

Of course, you could also just get a cargo box now if you anticipate doing these kind of trips a few times a year. Again MPG will be impacted slightly, but not much, just remove it after the trip.

Is the snowboard is in a bag –if not just warp it in an old bath towel. Why not just put it up and down the middle isle? It may intrude a little but the isle is wide enough. Personally I don't like to dismount bindings but pretty sure the board itself will fit between the sliding door and seat. You have space on the floor in front of the 2nd row seat (assuming that is where the child seat will be) and a folded down 3rd row seat for additional gear and stuff. If you are truly packing light (you don’t need much to go to the mountains unless this is an isolated area and you plan to camp) there is no need for a roof rack/box for this trip.

I’m jealous you can go snowboarding in the middle of summer and we have a heat index of 105 today and 115 tomorrow. That and I haven’t touched my board in over 3 years :(

a set of thule cross bars are very practical and useful. you can put a box on them, or just get a snowboard mount (lots cheaper than a box). thule roof bags are lots cheaper than a box also.

Snowboard mount should also have less effect on mpgs than a big (but more aerodynamic) box, which will have much less drag than a rooftop bag. The $$ you save buying a bag will be spent on extra gas.
So, if you foresee needing a box, I'd say just get that b/c its less money spent overall, but if you don't see packing the car full of passengers for your trips being a common occurrence, go for the snowboard mount.

that would be a LOT of gas; bags are $100 or less; boxes are $350 to way up. I wouldn't be so quick to make an assumption about one vs the other w/o wind tunnel testing or real world A/B comparisons.

We're in Hilton Head right now and borrowed a monster Yakima Spacecase for our Inno rack for the trip. (me/wife/3 kids) We got ~26mpg average on the 700 mile trip down with a/c running most of the time, so don't worry about a mpg hit, it's not that bad even with a big box.

I own a bag and tho I never bought the $350 Mazda5 load bars, anytime I have used it, I have lost a good 5 mpg. Don't know what I would lose if I had a solid box, but over 1000 mi, that works out to be a good $30-$40 spent on gas. Sure, not much - for one trip. But once you buy the carrier of your choice, you will need to use repeatedly, so over a few years, you have spent the difference in gas, assuming that the bag doesn't rip to shreds before you can use it enough to have equalized the cost. If not, (or if some of your belongings get ruined b/c of inclement weather) and you must replace the bag early, then it becomes more expensive.
My point is that NEW boxes are WAAAAYYY overpriced, but if you foresee needing a rooftop carrier not just now but far into the future as well, just get the box - making sure it is fully adjustable, so it will fit a multitude of cars. Oh, and look for used. Saving $50-$100 takes away some of the sting.
As for me, well the wife took the 5 for a 500-mi round trip mini-vaca to Yuma and travelling only 80 mph (yes, ONLY - its a southwestern US thing, if you don't understand, don't try) she confirmed that our particular 5MT is not an interstate road-trip vehicle, as she only got 21 mpg, and that's 1 adult, 4 kids, so maybe a max of 400 lbs total cargo, no rooftop bag or box. Just 4000 rpm on the tach for 240 miles straight. And with a bag on top of the Volvo, we get the same mpg, so the current school of thought is to replace the aging Ram w/a new 2010+ 6-seat model with the MDS and a verified 20 mpg hwy. No need for a box, and it comes with a really HUGE storage space. This allows us to keep the 5 and the Volvo, which both get above EPA suggested mpgs around town saving us $$ on what is easily 90% of all our mileage, while giving us a spacious vehicle for long trips, outdoor activities and of course, all the stuff I usually use the truck for now. Long, windy desert highway journeys have beat our bag up pretty bad. It no longer has any waterproofing material, so its just a canvas duffelbag with tie-downs now. Not replacing the truck for a few years, either, so I am still looking for a good deal on a box. Not $350 tho.
