ok. i have an 04 RX8 with a greddy turbo kit.. im not a beginner to turbos (see sig) and i know the turbo thats in the kit sucks as well as the couplers.. ok.. what i want to know.. is whats a good replacement.. my greddy is completely shot!! also the car is POURING a s*** ton of smoke out the exhaust.. it starts about 20 seconds after turning the car on.. and doesnt seem to stop unless i rev the motor (only do it when warm) then it will start smoking again about 10 seconds after it comes to idle.. i know some is to do with the turbo.. but ive never seen a cloud of smoke that big from a turbo seal going bad.. it has a Check engine light for APV valve stuck open and manifold pressure high.. i changed the leading spark plugs with a step colder bc of the turbo.. the trailing looked great so i didnt change them... WHATS WRONG.. HELP.. i want to drive the RX8 again..

it has a cobb accessport tune on it.. afrs are near perfect.. if you just let it sit there and idle.. it wont quit.. it just pours like mad hell out the back.. it almost looks like the amount of smoke you get if you use seafoam

I wouldn't be bothered at all. although my cars not an rx8.
mine smoked like crazy this morning as it had sat in the garage for almost 2 weeks. embarassing but once I'v slowly drove a few blocks it's gone.
after work it didn't even smoke because i flogged it before shutting down.
it's somewhat normal I think your turbo's fine it's obviously not old.
I think it's more too do when you serviced last.
not driving it hard enough once the car has warmed up.
what oil are you running?

edit. there was a slight breeze which blew it over the car the smoke cloud was well above the roof.
and sitting there idling doesn't make it go away.

no, my turbo is completely shot.. trust me.. i am pretty sure the seal is destroyed (it leaks oil on the ground from the housing.. lol) my smoke goes away if i drive it.. but as soon as it comes to an idle.. it all comes back in the huge cloud..
i run 5w20 synthetic oil, it was just changed.. and trust me.. when i can drive the car.. i dont baby it.. i do a few 7k rpm pulls b/c its known to be good for a rotary..

edit.. car only has 45K miles

ohh thats a completely different story always though greddy were a decent brand.
t04z and gt30/35 make so much power. I"m not into running that much boost....

problem with the greddy kit is it uses a mitsubishi t618z turbo.. aka.. junk

OK, this may or may not help but i will tell you what i know,

I have been a mechanic for several yrs, not on rotorys but alot of stuff still applys to any motor.
And im not insulting your intellegents
I had a smoking issue but it was under high rpms that it really showed. With Extreme crank case pressure. to the point it went up the oil fill neck back threw the intake and in the housings. I basicly fig the apxe seals where shot, sent motor out and ya i was right but anyways heres some info

Now there is 3 types of smoke

White smoke- Normally is a Burning Coolant issue
Blue Tinted Smoke- Normally Burning oil
Black Smoke- Exsesive Fuel Burn

I would remove the turbo, look in the exhaust for oil signs, or disconect the down pipe and run car to see if oil and/or smoke come out. look in the inkae side of oil as well. now in the vid you posted i dont see blue tint and it really looks like a coolant issue just from the vid tho. If you can post some other info on it or other things you find i might be able to help some more. hope this helps a lil

You should be running a heavier weight oil like 5-40 or 10-40 at least. It could help with the smoke. Did you ever get the turbo replaced?

Your right, the smoke looks like the results of Seafoam. From the color I would agree the it looks like coolant or water is getting into the engine somehow. Since you say that the coolant level has not changed the next question I have is how much oil is it using? .3 quarts per 1K miles, 1 quart, more?

BTW, the last set of intake ports open at 7250 so you will have to pull a bit farther than 7K to be sure they are not getting clogged up with carbon deposits. I figure you already know this, just mentioning it in case someone else reads this and doesn't know.

I haven't been driving the car since it started to smoke.. I got it and this started about 500 miles after I got it.. Noticed oil coming out of turbo and it's been parked since.. I'm still waiting for the turbo to be finished with a rebuild.. Then I'll send it to someone for an install..

any other thoughts before i just send the thing out for a rebuild.. and anyone know a good shop for rotaries in ohio?
