Need help with 2013 CX-5 Infotainment Sat Nav

Hi All,

I am in the UK, and have recently purchased 2013 CX-5 with what I believe is the NB1 navigation system, and have become aware of an issue with the navigation / head unit. The situation is:

The SD card is the original Mazda European maps for 2013. The navigation system works on screen, but I am unable to hear any voice directional commands. The voice guidance is turned on and voice volume set at 100%, and is not muted. The voice selection is English and when tested I am unable to hear anything. This is the same for all voice selections. I note that when the radio is on the volume lowers when the voice is tested. I installed TomTom home and updated the software (not maps or any additional services), but no change to the outcome. I contacted TomTom asking Is this an issue with the SD card or the head unit? And they of course responded with “that the root cause lies in the hardware of the device”.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?, and if so did you find a solution.

The solutions I am considering are:

Option 1 – Replacing the head unit with a second hand one. I believe that the one in the car is the original Panasonic NB1 (Part # GKK966DV0C).

On looking for a replacement I note there is also two made by Sanyo (Part # KR8566DV0A & Part # KD5366DV0B). If going down this route, a) Is there any difference between the manufacturers for function / user interface? b) Are they all Plug and Play, and c) Is the TomTom SD card paired / locked to the original head unit?

Option 2 – Upgrading the head unit for an Android unit with google maps etc. My concern with this is that a) the steering wheel controls will be lost and b) the parking sensor display and function will also be lost.

If anyone has any experience of a fix for this or suggestions for a solution, I would be grateful for any advice.

I would doubt it is the radio hardware if other audio functions work. Are you sure that the nav voice is turned up? Check this by entering a route and having it speak the direction and then turn up the radio volume WHILE the direction voice is active.

No spoken directions with nav voice at 100% and also with radio on at 50 % ( loud). The only thing I get is the radio quietens a little when the voice is supposed to be giving directions. The same radio volume reduction applies when the voice is tested in the settings.

You may want to try buying an 8 GB SD Card. TomTom says it won't work but the original SD card can't hold all the new info that's been generated since 2012 when your CX-5 was probably made, like mine.
I put new card in my desktop, booted up my TomTom app & downloaded new maps. It took a while for the head to read it but it's good to go now. Best of luck to you.
