My stock turbo just crapped out on me, at least that's what my mechanic is saying. While driving in the city my car lost boost and felt like it was hitting a wall. I don't know much seeing as how I'm new to the turbo game but I'm not trying to get screwed over. Help would be amazing.
I need to purchase a new bolt onturbo, with an internal wastegate nothing too big because I don't want to blow the engine. And I'm not balling with money so I want to get a cheap but reliable turbo. I also am scared that once I replace it they will tell me there is some other problem
I need to take care of. Or the turbo isn't right for the car. This is making my consider just junking the car but the tranny was just replaced, stage 1 clutch just put in, few other mods. I'm not tryna lose all that just because of the turbo. Please help!

The mechanic says the turbo is bad cause the codes show up but part of me thinks it could just the LSD or ecu

LSD would leave your car on the side of the road, ecu factory tune isn't the best but if the car ran before it's not the ecu.

Factory turbo is a Garret GT2554R, you can find them used on the forum or ebay from time to time, a new one will run around $1k-ish. You can't really go smaller, no need to go bigger.

there will never be a code for a "bad turbo" maybe for a system too lean code which is a vacuum leak. unless youre burning through oil like crazy, or pull off the coupler to the intake and check for excessive shaft play. if theres excessive shaft play then yea the turbo is toast. but if not then it could be either a bad wastegate, or vacuum leak somewhere. do u have a boost gauge? is it reading correctly? ... a broken LSD the car isnt moving anywhere, and the ecu is tuned bad from the factory.

When my factory turbo went out on me I was able to start it and drive it, just wasn't able to go into boost. The turbo would make a loud whining sound when attempting to accelerate or rev the engine. When the LSD went out, I wasn't even able to drive the car. It stopped where it was at, and wouldn't drive even after puttin it in gear.

Thats my experience, hope this helps.

I can drive it. No boost but the car feels like its hitting a wall and lagging and accelerates crazy slow. Is it definitely the turbo? It may just be the wastegate I definitely need a new one. But I think they would have noticed a vacuum leak or other problem. I just need to know that after spending lets say 1500$ that my car will run again normally. This mechanic ice never worked with before so I don't know if he's trying to run me for my money

The previous owner tuned down to 3psi I have no idea why but the actuator is stuck so I never could raise it back to stock

there is no technical or correct way to turn down the boost on a wastegate that has a spring rating of 6-7ish psi. if your car is not going into boost then i would lean more towards a vacuum leak. not even a boost controller can lower boost. only raise it. so i think this guy is trying to take u for your money. bad turbo simply check the CHRA and see if theres any shaft play. or whining. or excessive oil in your intercooler piping.

I would def get a second opinion from another shop if you have doubts about the this mechanic. Hitting the wall could be fuel cut and or a heatsoaked intercooler if you still have the stock side mount and you mentioned after city driving. How is it in the morning before too much heat is generated by the engine?
