Need help installing GPS

I just bought a Kenwood Excelon DNX9960 radio with GPS. I need help on where to find these wires on my 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege.

1. Speed sensor wire for GPS (I suppose that I can tap into the pin 28 or 58 of the main computer)
2. Reverse wire (if there is one inside the car, if not I can trace it to the tail light).
3. Emergency brake wire (I think that I can tap into the emergency brake directly, it is easy this way).

Also where is the Pin 58 located? At the ECU or can I tap it at behind the gauge panel? What color is the wire? Someone help me, I want to do it this weekend.

Kenwood DNX Install

Hi,
I thought I would give a couple of helpful hints for install.
I have a Kenwood DNX5120 in my wifes Mazda MPV, but the wire harness
and install should be almost identical.

1. IF you are not using a rear view camera, or some kind of input when in
reverse gear, you don't need to install the reverse wire at all!

2. As for the parking brake wire, that is a safety switch so you can't watch
video while driving (the parking brake off). Just ground that wire to the
chassis ground behind the radio and it will work just fine. Also, go to the
setup menu and select safety to OFF.

3. The GPS did not require the speed wire to function on my unit, so I am
not sure if you have to have that wire installed for your Excelon...?

Throw up some pics when you get it installed! I am wanting to do the same
thing to my MSP. Where did you get the install kit to do the double DIN?

I will install the rear vew camera. I got it.

The instructions from Cruthfield say that I need to tap into the speed sensor. I have found some info in the forums but I want to make sure. I will try to take as much pictures as I can.

I believe when i installed my turbo timer that i tapped a purple wire on the ecu for the speed sensor.
Reverse wire can be found near/under the MAF under the hood. There is a wire connection on tranny for reverse lights.
Don't hook up to Ebrake. just ground it anywhere

Hi all;

Cruthfield's instructions stated that I needed to use the speed sensor for the GPS. To my surprise the Garmin GPS instructions did not require any speed sensor connection. The entire setup took about 4 hours, but it worked from the first time. Now I have the radio/GPS/Sirus/DVD player/TV tuner/rear view camera/Bluetooth for my cell in one unit. I took lots of pictures and I will try to post the process of installation just in case someone wants to do it so that it is a lot faster that what I did.

My Pioneer head unit's faceplate got jacked, so now I'm looking to upgrade to the Kenwood DNX9960. Seems to be the best all-in-one head unit out there today.

Gus, how did your install go? Did you need any kind of dash kit or did the DNX9960 fit straight into the double DIN opening on the MSP with it's own cage?

Well first of all I have a Protege ES, not MSP. Secondly, I've read the stickies.

My question was whether a double DIN unit like the Kenwood eXcelon DNX9960 requires any dash kit to fit in the double DIN slot of the Protege. AFAIK, that question isn't answered in the sticky.

For the Kenwood Units you don't need the bypass unit....just ground to
chassis and select Safety Off in the menu....should never give you issues.
I have done a LOT of Kenwood installs over the years. It's always possible
that your head unit is different, but that series is the same wire harness
as mine.

Thanks. I also recently discovered that the bypass is not needed.

Gonna order the DNX9960 in the next day or so. Found a great deal on ebay but I'm wary about warranty and how legit the unit is. Seller has excellent feedback, but you never know...

I had no problems installing the Kenwood GPS unit. I love the way it looks. It was a straight pug in. It took me around 2 1/2 hours to complete. I also had to install the rear view camera, the GPS, the Sirus satellite radio. I will try to post pictures this weekend.

So you didn't need to buy a dash kit or anything, right? Everything that came with the unit was sufficient to install it?

How do you like the 9960? I'm very close to buying it but not sure I wanna drop so much dough on a head unit.
