Need clutch advice ASAP!

Get the spec dude. ACT went down the shitter about a year ago. They used to have their actual disks manufacutered by exedy, and then the cost cutters changed thier manufactuer and now they are absolute crap. Even the DSM boys who swear their lives on ACT 2600's have gone elsewhere because of disks shattering or massive clutch failure after a couple of thousand of miles.

My SPEC has been nothing short of amazing. Stock engagment, holds like a motherfucker, no chatter, no shudder, nothing. Everything you could want from a clutch and then some.

funny how your post is completly ignored....yet this info is very key.

What you are saying is true....ACT has gone to s*** especially in the DSM Community. My friend has told me all about this stuff who owns a 95 talon TSI.

I would be careful buying the act. Let us know how it holds up.

I am also looking into a new clutch setup. didn't know there was an option besides the act, where can i find the spec clutch? i already have the mazdaspeed lightened flywheel on the way. any advice on what i should go with? my stock clutch sometimes slips causing boosts in revs/boost that i am not comfortable with.

Not ignored, just posted after I placed my order. Unfortunately I needed to make a decision in a very short period of time and can't entertain suggestions after the fact. I totally respect daedalus's opinions, but right now I just needed a clutch. I'm sure I'll be fine wiht the ACT. I don't plan on pushing the same amount of HP that he is.

Apreciate it man! I was beginning to think i was in a twilight zone for a minute there.

Leonardo - You can get the spec clutch directly through them, or Mental Addiction has them on their website, and I think protegegarage.com can get them as well. Also, you might want to contact TurfBurn (steve @ NSN...) i'm pretty sure he can source them as well...

Stage 3 Hybrid...

If your not going for 300whp, the stage2 is supposed to be pretty badass and its cheaper too.

Identicle to stock as far as pedal pressure, engagment, ease of slipping the clutch.

Cant tell a difference... except that it just grabs and your off... no slippage whatsoever. Best aftermarket clutch i've ever purchased.

I have the stage 3 hybrid as well, and will say it is a very good clutch, and feels/holds very well,no issue with that what so ever.

but I will say, when letting out the clutch,I fell it does give the feel of slipping ,till you let it out,it grabs all you can through at it.

I just bought the stage 2+ with the lightened pressure plate from the Spec web site. I'm expecting it any day now. The news about ACT going down hill scared me off.

I would get the MSP clutch. It is very smooth and quiet and it will hold over 300 whp and torque. It will not kill your thrust bearing like most aftermarket plates will.

Huh?

Are you saying it would be best to replace the MSP clutch with another MSP clutch?

I needed the pressure plate and pilot bearing, too. Might as well get the whole thing. The stock clutch sucks IMO. ACT should be here today or tomorrow.

I have seen more problems with aftermarket clutch set ups then with the stock MSP. I know the stock MSP may not hold as much power as some of the other units but he is not looking to make tons of power.

I ment the whole clutch kit from Mazda not just the clutch plate. How many miles did the stock clutch last you? Why did it suck for you?

Gotcha...just wanted to check and see if that was what you were trying to say with your post.

I have to believe that the ACT might hold up better than stock though at the lower HP number too.

What do you think?

Just because it is aftermarket, doesn't necessarily mean it is better. Case in point, blkzoomzoom. I am running the msp clutch for my swap. Its smooth and I know it will hold. Fast Lane had it on his insane build and he was shooting out gobs of power. I am no where close, so I know that this clutch will hold up. How you drive with your clutch will tell you what its life will be like.

Maybe, but it is not as the CIA likes to say "its a slam dunk". They are harder to break in and sometimes they fail within a few hundred miles. Do not buy a clutch to handle 500 hp if you are only going to make 250. The trade offs are not worth it.

It helds Deans MSP, he made more lowend torque then only on this forum that I have seen post a real dyno file. He dynoed around 340 torque to the wheels at 15psi. He later ran 21psi and the car was all over the road. Never got to dyno at 21psi. He should have been over 360-380 torque at that point.
