I found this kit on ebay, and wanted to know what everyone thinks of the price/brands that the parts are if you dont click the link its $270 and The timing belt is Contitech. The tensioner and idler pulleys are GMB and or Koyo. The water pump is NPW and the drive belts are Contitech and or Bando, let me know what you guys think!

Have you compared their price with a Gates kit? Never heard of some brand names in the kit you linked, but they may be good. I have never experienced problems with Gates belts. You said your timing belt is broken, you may have some internal engine damage. The P5 is an interference engine, meaning, if the timing belt breaks there can be some damage from valves hitting pistons. See this article for more information.

Not to call you out Flash, but the P5's engine, despite being listed as such, is not an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks, there will e no internal damage, so not to worry p5pusher. I would look at the Gates kit, many people use their products.

Not to doubt either one of you, but is there a way to tell with certainty whether the P5's engine is interference or not? I'm coming up on 55k so it's something I gotta start thinking about. The link says interference, Mazdaspeeder says not, and I don't know enough about the engine to tell. Anyone? If it makes any difference, I've a 2003 P5, though I would expect the 2002, maybe earlier, to be the same.

Hey P5Pusher - what mileage were you at when it broke?

^^^According to several members who have torn down their engines the engine is non-interference.

At 55k you should be fine. According to the OM, it should be checked at 60k and replaced at 105k. I am currently at 106k on the original and know of someone pushing 120k on his original.

non-interference engine (worked on mazdas 7 years) go with gates - better warranty and know its going to to be the right parts
