Navigation Stopped Working

Hey all,

My mother has a 2008 CX-9. The car has been great all these years. The lease is up in a couple months and she will be getting a 2011 CX-9 to replace it because she loves the car so much. However.....there is one problem that I cant seem to fix or make sense of.

When we bought the car the navigation was working without a problem. For her purposes it was great and we had no issues. Then a little over a year ago the navigation just suddenly stopped working all together. It just says "Please insert correct map disk" and then it repeats underneath in what I can only guess is Chinese. We have never taken the disk out (up until a few days ago I couldn't even figure out where it was). The disk looks clean, no smudges or scratches.

This is the twist...I made her take it to the dealership on Monday and they said that it was the wrong disk that was in the drive. This makes no sense to me since it's the same disk that has always been in there. They said it was the setup disk and not the actual map disk....personally I think they are full of $hit. Is there such a thing as a setup disk though or is this dealership just not wanting to fix whatever the real issue is??

TIA,
Chase

That's what I thought. I can't believe the dealership would lie about that rather then just fix the problem. Actually, I really am not that surprised. When i confronted them about it they kept trying to place blame elsewhere. As long as this is in fact the correct CD I can proceed to go to another dealership and see if they will fix the issue.

I have been meaning to burn a backup of my disc...I believe my 2008 9 has a newer disc than revision D, so when I get around to it, I will post the .iso. I would be interested in seeing if there is something wrong with your disc or not. I would suspect that your dvd reader in the trunk has gone bad. That sucker aint cheap at all. If that is the cause, go to www.car-part.com and find a vendor who has a cx-9 with nav in their yard (which will be few to none) and ask them for a price on that unit in the trunk. Just keep your eye open from time to time and a cx-9 with nav will pop up at some point.

StreetChase, the disc is the correct one.
A Setup disc is needed to load drivers into the unit only for the first time.
People who take CX9 to other countries might also need the setup disc to change
other settings.

In your case, if it's still under warranty, let dealer handle it.
This actually happened to my '08 once, but it disappeared at next startup.
The causes could be
- defected disc (many possible reasons)
- bad NAVI unit
- temporary read error (such as my case)

Your dealer is trying to be an A-S-S because if it is the UNIT itself that fails, it will
cost more than $2000 to replace it.

It would be nice to have a copy that i know for a fact works just so I can rule out the disk itself. However, the car is still under warranty so I'm going to take it to the dealership as soon as my mom can arrange alternate transportation. Unfortunately the vehicle was purchased out of state so the local dealerships wont give her a rental.

That makes sense. I figured the dealership we went to just didn't want to deal with it which is kind of unethical in a sense but oh well. We were going to purchase her new CX-9 from them once her lease was up on this one but now we will go elsewhere. Luckily there is another dealership equidistant to this one just in the other direction. As far as what the problem might be, well even when I remove the disk the Navi screen remains unchanged. It doesn't seem to care whether or not there is even a disk in the drive. The same message remains constant.

Thanks for the input guys. Ill let you know how everything turns out once we get this resolved.

Alright so I managed to steal my moms car away long enough today to take it to the dealership. Armed with all the knowledge I have gotten over the past few days they had no way of contesting my claims that the Nav unit itself was bad. They took my Nav dvd and tried it in another car without issue. They then tried to come up with an elaborate story (bicker) as to why they gave me the run around the first time which I knew was complete BS. However, the end result is a new complete Nav system being ordered to replace this one under warranty. The parts should be in either tomorrow or Thursday. (nana)

Great news.
So it is bad NAVI unit, then.

Yep. They are swapping out the HU and DVD reader. I have my fingers crossed and hope they give me an updated map disk as well but I'll be happy just as long as everything works again. My mom is driving up to Connecticut this weekend and I don't want her looking at her iPhone for directions. She dropped the car back off today to have everything installed so we should have it back tomorrow if all goes well.

Just wanted to update this thread with the final results. Navigation was fixed and works great! The dealership didn't give us the newest map disk, just put the old Rev D DVD back in. Which is no big deal. She is turning the car in in August and getting a 2011/2012 model anyway. It took some time and a little bit of arguing on my part but in the end they did resolve all the issues we had. My mom is now safely in Connecticut thanks to the Navi.
