N/A Mods advice

Hey everyone i'm bringing back this thread because I got some questions that needs answers.

For headers i'm still debating, but I have been eyeing the Wagner SS headers.
My question is with the Wagner Shorty header and Wagner downpipe w/cat, can I also install the MAM midpipe w/high flow cat? If i go with this set-up will this add some signifcant power or will it keep restriction to get power out of the car.

Currently here is what I have in mind for my NA mods:
K&N CAI
OBX,Wagner,or other brand headers
Racing Beat CB or 2.25 CB(is this size good for NA?)
Polish TB
MAM midpipe w/high flow cat
Wagner downpipe w/high flow cat
PnP Head
NA camshafts( what brand is out there for the P5?) indicate website
Cam gears( what brand is out there for the P5?)indicate website
Engine Mangement either Haltech or Microtech(what do you recommend?)
With the mods listed do i need a transmission cooler and oil cooler?
Also do I NEED to upgrade my valve body and torque convertor?

Thanks In advance everyone.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the wagner downpipe will bolt right up to the mam midpipe. They made both items to bolt up with stock piping so I don't see why both can't be bolted up together. Thats the exhaust setup I'm going to use. As far as gains, you will see gains. I dont have the dowpipe yet but with the mam midpipe with high flow cat I saw gains. I'm sure you will be happy with that exhaust setup, I know I will be when I'm done with it.

-KN is nice, Injen is cheaper.
-OBX Header, PROTEGEGARAGE.COM (YOU NEED ONE)
-Bosal combo deal on PGarage or Corksport full
-TB isn't going to give you much, if anything.
-PnP Head, welcome to my world, bring your wallet.
-Camshafts, just go J-Spec until Wagner's gear can be really justified.
-Cam gears, SR. Available on corksport.
-Engine Management, MPi, contact Nick @ MPI

the reason I say this is because I have had all of the above.

K&N typhoon is a great piece of work.

Get an OBX header. Why bother getting a shorty header and then the downpipe? One piece fits all! Plus it's a damn good price.

Polishing the TB will help, but not anything huge.

Mipipe w/hiflow cat is nice, but keep in mind the increased noise/loudness/droning

I see what you're doing now w/the wagner header/downpipe - trying to stay "legal". If you gotta do it, you gotta do it. Though I would still say the OBX would be better as there is no cat on it, hi-flow or otherwise.

PnP head is nice, though a little costly and time-consuming.

N/A camshafts can be purchased from corksport.com, and I think Ken at ProtegeGarage can get them for you as well.

I've seen Cam Gears also on corksport's website I believe. I've seen people owning ones from Tri Point and SR Motorsports.

Haltech or Microtech should work, either one. Haltech's been around longer, but Microtech seems to be stirring a lot of interest and enthusiasm. Search around for these two on the forums.

You have an auto? So do I. I doubt you'd need a cooler/upgraded torque converter, etc. Though I think eventually you should probably put in at least a cooler to help the tranny out w/the extra hp.

There's one thing you didn't list, and that's an underdrive pulley. Look around for those as well - the difference on my car with it installed was like night and day.

Hope this helps. I'm probably wrong on a few things, but (shrug) :)

Hey thanks everyone for posting. One more thing which will give my auto P5 more output in power in terms of hp/whp, which setup?

Wagner SS headers->Wagner downpipe w/highf-flow cat->MAM midpipe w/high-flow cat-> Racing Beat CB OR

OBX Headers->MAM midpipe w/high flow cat-> Racing Beat CB

Also is a racing beat CB good for an NA set-up? Or another type of exhaust would be better?

Which size is better for an auto NA set-up 2.25 or 2.5 exhaust system?

Thanks everyone for the posts.

OBX header line would give you more output in power. Also a little cheaper as well. If you're trying to stay "emissions legal", especially in California, then having two cats to show, even if they're hi-flow, are better than nothing. In that case, get the Wagner setup. Otherwise, if you can afford to lose the first cat, then go for the OBX.

Most exhausts at 2.25" or 2.5" should both work out. They're much better than stock anyways. And if you got a hi-flow midpipe, which is 2.5" diameter, then you might as well do 2.5" all the way back.

Keep in mind of course that this thing's gonna be LOUD! So be prepared to dynamat your hatch area and perhaps the floor by the front seats...

To be honest, your much better off buying the OBX and having a 2 catalyst mid-pipe made. Much cheaper and the welds won't blow off of it.

go obx. go 2.25" system. go microtech simply because it's cheaper than the haltech (i'm pretty sure, well it is here in oz). go j-spec intake cam, custom exhaust cam. dont touch the head or TB. get a tranny cooler.

Hey everyone I am now in the process of modding my auto P5. I bought some accesories and will be ordering my intake next month. Got some questions though.
With these mods:
K&N CAI
OBX headers
Racing Beat CB exhaust
RR-racing UDP
FS-ZE intake camshaft
Mazdaspeed exhaust camshaft
NGK iridium spark plugs
Magnecor spark plug wires

Will I be able to reach 170 hp? If not please indicate what other mods would help give me more horsepower.

Also are AWR front and rear motor mounts really necessary? I ask because I am not planning on adding these. Is that ok or will I need to install them with the mods I listed?

Also if the mods listed isn't enough to reach at least 170hp and other mods are needed will I then need motor mounts? Thanks in advance.

at best you may get 150 crank hp, not 170hp. thanks to the stock computer, even with these mods you're not going to be unleashing huge numbers. the auto trans lessens the effect of these mods even moreso.

without any major headwork and getting an EMS to take full advantage of your mods you wont see close to 170 with what you listed. prob at max what you listed like 120something. headwork and EMS and also might as well get a 626 intake manifold(do a search) you will get over 150whp. $$$

Here is what I have.

MP3 ECU, Injen CAI, Jet-hot ceramic coated Ractive 4-1 header, MAM midpipe with high flow cat & a Magnaflow cat back exhaust.

I dyno'd at MAM with high 116 in the middle of the AZ summer.

Before that I dyno'd in the winter with all of the above mods except I had an ebay SRI with a K&N filter and a Mazdaspeed axle back exhaust.

Here are my dyno sheets from the winter dyno run.

not to burst your bubble dude, but you will probly barely break 110whp,if that.look at my sig and you will see the mods i am running.I am pretty much set as far as modds besides an ecu, headwork and internals(dont want internals).with all the modds i am running and my cam gears dyno tuned,I hit 123whp and 158wTQ on a manual tranny.the automatic tranny will see alot less gains on the dyno,so you might be dissapointed.sorry to be the bearer of bad news bro.but you will enjoy the fact that you will be much better off then a stock auto P5.

Hey everyone, thanks alot for your responses. Just to clarify though I know that a stock P5 is 130 hp and I'm asking what mods will help me gain 40 more hp to get 170. Not 170 to the wheels, but to the crank. Nontheless thanks for the responses.

130 at the crank amounts to 95 at the wheels on a 5 speed P5.

Hey everyone once again I would like your prediction on how much whp gain could I potentially get on my Sport AT P5 with these mods. The majority of these mods I already have I just need to install them.
K&N SRI
Wagner Shorty Header
Racing Beat Catback exh. system
RR-racing UDP
J-spec intake camshaft
Mazdamotorsports exh. camshaft
NGK V Power spark plugs
Magnecor spark plug wires
AWR Motor Mounts
AWR Side Engine Mount Inserts
Microtech EM
MAM midpipe w/hfc

Thanks In advance everyone.

I would say 115-118whp on your car.

I dyno'd 116whp/120tq with cams, intake, header, axle-back. But then you look at Redneck's dyno with the same amount of whp but with a lot more mods than me. It's weird..but you can't predict these things. Just go dyno and see for yourself.

I updated your mods list:
K&N SRI
Wagner Shorty Header
Racing Beat Catback exh. system
RR-racing UDP
J-spec intake camshaft
Mazdamotorsports exh. camshaft
Microtech EMS
MAM midpipe w/hfc

Because you have ignition and fuel control now, I'm also going to go with the 115-120whp region.

wrong...There are so many variables with this that you cannot reasonably say it...not being a dick...comments like this result in floods of pms on "how much will my cat-back give me BHP wise???"...and then respond with a post such as this, that makes it even harder to convince them otherwise...
