N/A Mods advice

Hey people...

Stop worrying about peak hp...the only thing you (the thread starter) needs to be worried about is simply the car will definately feel stronger than it does now...None of us can give you a peak gain number realistically because you have not supplied us with a base run...without a base run, we give you numbers, but those numbers could be radically different than what a dyno would show you...simply because there are different types of dynos that are calibrated differently, and hp in general is not a very competant standard for the differences between different engines...not because of what it represents, but because there are seversal different ways to derive it from torque...

this is what to worry about...get a base run...and then get some mods and dyno it again...this will give you something to work with...if the same dyno was used both times...it will show you an accurate difference in the amount of work your engine is capable of doing...and that is all that is important...peak numbers are useless unless they are all coming from the exact same equipment...the only reason dynos are around in the first place is to make a run, then mod, then see if you gain or lost anything relative to before the mod...

sorry man...but when you ask how much power this will give you...then do or don't buy these mods because of what someone on an internet site told you...you are missing out on the best part of car tuning...

...which is suprising yourself...

130 at the crank amounts to 95 at the wheels on a 5 speed P5.

This is misleading, because the FS doesn't really make 130hp. I stand by my claim that it was overrated along with the Miata and RX-8 during their few years of shinanigans. The NB Miata was rated as 155, but then lowered to 148. The RX-8 was rated at 255hp, then adjusted to 238. In both cases, customers were given the option to have their vehicles bought back from Mazda. The FS in 3rd gens were also overrated.

Why would the 1st Gen BP's make 105-111whp on Dynojets, and MSP's making 150whp on Dynojets, all the while the 3rd Gens are laying down 95-100whp? The FS should have been rated at 120hp, but they had no way of justifying the FS making less power than any of the old 1.8's.

excuse me guy's wer can i get a high performance intake and exhaust cams? any idea? price? for 2 liter protege.. tnx..

Since engine management was mentioned before, I have a question about it. Which is better? And by better I mean, yields most HP, but also easy to control and fairly simple to install. Here are the options: AEM unit or something like the Microtech or Haltech units? Can anyone link me to some information about them? I NEED something to upgrade my ECU. I have a 1.6 liter 2000 model sedan, auto. Not looking for a unit to break my wallet or such, but want to see what prices I may/may not have to pay. Thanks in advance all.

Don't waste your time modding that engine. Spend your money and get an FE3 engine and tranny, then mod that.

And how much would that cost me? Where would I begin to look for something like this? What would be the benefit of swapping out what I have for this FE3 engine & tranny?

fe3 - check this out.

Yeah, I read most of it, but not all of it. How difficult would the swap be? What all would I need to do something like this? Ive never even thought about doing something like this. Would I need to swap the tranny as well or could that be optional? When I finally get the chance to boost, what kind of kit would/should I get? A kit for the FE3 or for my 1.6?

Did you read that page at all? You could boost this engine til the cows come home.

I don't know what it would take to do the swap, but I'd probaby use the Sportage tranny, as well as the engine. I'd probably ditch the stock ECU and run a stand-alone. Most engine swaps require custom fabrication. If it's not something you can tackle yourself, you might want to find a capable shop to help out, if you're serious about it.

Yeah, Id have to say that you peaked my interest. A swap was nothing I even considered up to this point. I was kinda content with my 1.6 so I was looking at other ways to up the HP and response. Of course boost was going to be my answer, but not till later on in the future. But seeing that I might be able to get the FE3 engine for relatively cheap, thats something to look into. You have an idea as to what the Sportage tranny might cost me? I figure if Im going to dish out all this money for the new engine and all, I might dish out a little extra and get me a new torque converter as well.

Do you or maybe Twilight know how much fabrication work like this might cost? If its something feasible, then it could be something I start saving for....

Is there a turbo kit available for the FE3?

Torque converter? No man, why waste your time with an auto? Get the 5-speed tranny that comes with the Sportage. There would be no turbo kit available for the FE3, especially since it'll be custom installed in the 3rd Gen Protege(it was originally in the 626, as I'm sure you've read).

The good thing about the FE3 from the Sportage, is that it is lower compression, making it more suitable for boost...not that I'm condoning it. :P

So that means that I would have to piece a kit together? Whats the stock compression of our pistons now? Going lower could put me at what? Sorry for all the question, I don't know much about engine swaps and custom turbo kits. I don't even know where to begin looking to start me a kit. Would it cost a lot to switch from auto to manual?

I'd honestly recommend getting another car if you're looking to mod this car so radically and it's your only car and daily driver. If you have a beater you can use, then continue. Just be prepared to dump a decent amount of time and money into this project. The question to ask yourself - is it all worth it?

I would like to keep my car only because its paid off. I have the extra money every month so I might be able to afford it. Honestly, Im really looking to boost my car. Thats the one thing Ive drempt about doing to my car once it was paid off. Because I have the ZM-DE, its a lot easier to boost and holds it better than say the 1.8/2.0, right? Would I still be able to lower my compression and boost up to about 7 or 8 PSI? On an auto of course. Id have a new torque converter from Level Ten.

It is going to be a tonne of work, no doubt. You'll probably need custom axles, custom engine mounts etc. You have to use the 5-speed though. Just the 140hp from the FE3 alone would blow your tranny. LOL.

A custom turbo kit isn't a bit deal at all. I honestly believe that you should probably start a thread in the FI section, because not only is this the wrong section for that, I refuse to talk about turbo tuning in this section. (enguard)

BTW, when you said, "peaked my interest." The word you were looking for is "piqued," not "peaked."
