beating a dead horse..

ok, so to finish my rant, how does this package selection sound:

The 15inch Blizzaks for my wife (195/65QR15 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50).

The 16inch Blizzaks for me (205/55QR16 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50).

The only kicker is that they're out of the cheap-ass $44 rim in 16inch.(protest)

try getting Skinnier tires. Last car I had, I put 175 width on the rims, and it made a HUGE difference.... I don't know the science behind it, but I think it has to do with the weight distribution on the tire itself. Exactly why WRC cars have skinny tires when they race on snow..

Silver Bull3t : Go with the 15's

I found the same thing with my 3, the stock tire are terrible in snow. I bought four Hankook Ice Bears and rims from www.tiretrends.com and I cannot believe the difference in handling.

Winter tires

Replaced the 17" OEM Goodyear Eagle RS-A OEMs (Hydroplanes w/1000 miles on them!) with Dunlop Winter Sport M3 with 16" steel rims. Excellent on ice, no hydroplaning and unbelievable in 8-12" of snow.

skibike how much you pay for your set, id love to have a set of snow tires and wheels.

You're right. It has to do with weight distribution. Thinner tires have more psi on the road, so they dig to the bottom of the snow to where the traction is. Wider tires just float over the top.

Case in point:

Well, you people who are complaining about how the 3 sucks in snow, need to purchase snow tires. I'm used to driving my Speed in the snow with snows, but have also driven a P5 without snows...night and day difference, but thats hard to compare, so, I'll tell you my driving experience in my moms new Mazda 3 gt sedan. She got the 16 steelie(brake rotors) with Dunlops, and WOW, it handles amazing, like, better then my speed in the snow, and it's damn near impossible to get the rear end out, without some serious trail braking combined with a little e-brake. Like, they are awesome. Even when the snow was deep enough to make the front end a snow plow, she made it off the street, passing all the stuck SUV's and 4WD. Sure, maybe driving experience has a little to do with it, but tires make a HUGE difference. I personally do not think that all seasons should even be made, there should be summer tires, and snow tires. Adn weather specific tires also I suppose, all seasons to me, are completely useless now.

Well when I posted the original post I was comparing it to the other Mazdas I had (626 mx6) and how I NEVER had to put snow tires on and always ran all season run of the mill tires, my mx6 tires had nearly two years on them last winter and I didnt have any trouble at all! the car was amazing in the snow even the 626 with crapy tires was pretty good, ive had my 3s 5 months and this winter has been extremely mild (only 3 snow storms) and ive got suck on flat ground more times than I can count on one hand. Im not saying im the best driver but I have been driving in the snow for 8 years! and I race scca so I know all about controlled slide and threshold braking. I dont think you should HAVE to buy snow tires, I think you should be able to run with standard all seasons, I mean ive only had 3 storms all winter! The rest of the time clear and dry, snow tires would be more off a nuisance, especially with all the highway driving I do! just my two cents

The total was about $800 installed with the works. I'm sure I could have gotten them cheaper if i put more effort into it but this place is right by my house, they even drove my summer tires over to my place. It's never perfect though, since i went back after 100 miles to have them check the tires one of my lock nuts was gone! (boom01) No problems since that.

I dont think I'm gonna go with steel wheels and snows till next winter, sometime next month I'm gonna get Kumho ECSTA ASX Ultra-High Performance all-seasons. They're rated quite highly for both dry conditions and snow, and they're only $93 each!

dont sleep...

17 winters in Wyoming taught me a few things about winter driving, and it's affect on many different types of cars. Lighter cars don't do as well as heavier cars in most circumstances..especially acceleration. Everyone sung the praises of FWD to me when I began my search for car #2 (trading in a 1978 Chevy Monza) and when I decided on an '86 Civic, I was sorely disappointed in it's winter performance. (I'm thinking that the praises of FWD were coming from owners of DeVilles and LeSabres, heavier cars that move around in the snow with ease). I upgraded my tires from those crappy Michelins that Honda used to put on ALL of their cars, and it helped a little...but when things got deep, I actually resorted to tire cables (I REFUSED to put snow tires on my car). If your car isn't heavy enough to force those front tires down hard enough to get traction, there's not a lot you can do but be patient, leave yourself lots of room, lay off the gas, and upshift often. Higher gears and low RPMs afford you more traction...and the advantage to smaller cars is that they can USUALLY turn and stop quicker than a heavy beast. Inertia is your enemy on ice. Be careful out there!

Your the only cause to your winter driving trouble, with any of your cars.

YOU WONT USE WINTER TIRES, WHY THE HELL NOT, THEY ARE DESIGNED TO INCREASE YOUR TRACTION DURING WINTER AND ICE CONDITIONS.

Im sory, but THERE ARE NONE BLINDER THEN THOSE WHO REFUSE TO SEE.

I want able to go from a stop sign with my all seasons (keep in mind all season tires are designed for climats without a snow fall winter, and if there is snow that falls in your area, you need winter tires PERIOD, or your own stupidity is a danger on the road!) Oncw I got winter tires on. NO PROBLEM , I get impressed everytime I hit the break, there is so much deceleration but no slip, and I live in Montreal Quebec Canada, a location with some of the worst winter weather in North America.

& If your car isn't heavy enough to force those front tires down hard enough to get traction, YOU NEED BETTER TIRES!

ANY TIME YOU TAKE A 2 in 1 COMBO, THE PRODUCTS NEED TO MAKE COMPRAMISES TO ALLOW BOLTH PRODUCTS TO WORK.

it like those Tv / VCR's, nothing but trouble. The rubber needs to be very soft in cold climat. In summer & all season tires the compound is WAY Too hard and when the temp goes down they get even harder, TERRIBLE FOR TRACTION) Winter tires are made soft so in cold climate they still give and flex to give better traction.

Look through the forum, there are about 5 threads, of guys trying to live out the Winter with there all seasons, and they all wreaked there cars, and they were driving at reduced speeds. they just lost control and couldnt recover.

I carve ICE in my goodyear eagle treads, and feel secure.

*useless expletives and insults removed* ~gw2k

ALL SEASONS tires= any season but winter

Winter tires= Must in winter weather.

Gee... I've NEVER owned a set of winter tires and I've NEVER wrecked a car in the snow.

As long as you don't drive with your head up your ass, you'll be fine.

Winter aint over yet dont count your chickens before they hatch.

We also had a whole bunch of people boosting high with FCD installed, many people said it was dangerous, and the comon reply was "Ive been driving around for months and no problem" Then in the the ending months of summer, THERE MOTORS BLEW.

Come on! if you havnt had a accident yet count your blessings and get winter tires, because you accident might come tomorow, and you could hit a car with Kids in it and kill one, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL THEN?????????????????????????????????????????

Ok mister Canadian know-it-all, what do you think of this, EH?

Nokian makes a severe weather rated ALL SEASON TIRE (that means winter too! winter is a season *gasp!*) Called the NRW. It has the same winter rating as all of their winter tires, the only difference is that you will not lose tread at a higher rate in the summer time, which traditionally occurs with winter tires. I ran these tires on my 1994 Infiniti G20 (FWD) for 3 years, and dont try and tell me you have seen worse conditions in Canada because I live in New England.

These tires were amazing in the snow, and although the tread was heavy for the summer, it did not wear quickly and the tires came with a 60,000 mile (thats more than a kilometer, to clarify for you and any other non-US citizen) warranty.

I think everyone here appreciates your deep concern for our cars, but you need to realize that you're not 100% correct.

You people PISS ME OFF like Drunk Drivers (MY Mother was killed by a Drunk Driver when I was 10 months old) This IS NOT A JOKE.

If youre in a Snowy climate with all seasons, you are putting OTHER PEOPLE AT RISK!

And you a ASS for doing so (go ahead and edit it, it wont change the fact)

Youre not the only one on the road, have at least a little consideration, and the fact you havent wrecked yet is no indication it wont happen.

If thats the way your Logic works, you are a danger to society!

Keep in mind it only takes ONE accident to change MANY PEOPLES LIVES.

I really dont care about you or your life. If you want to put yourself at risk, THATS FINE, but when your on the public road, there are others there, its not just you on the road.

**** & they are even making it Illegal to drive without winter tires in Canada during winter.

Its too bad "commen sence"just isnt commen

LISTEN

Your funny, but you have no sense.

I was in Montral, during the "ICE STORM OF THE CENTURY"

And only in the last 2 weeks, we have had temps at around -40 to -45 (for anybody Outside of Canada, thats measured in Celsius, and its ******* cold) On top of that we get nothing but SNOW, and Our country place witch is 2 hours drive further North, and That local is blanketed with snow from Oct/Nov until April/May.

SO DONT TALK TO ME ABOUT SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Youre also missing the point and I sincerely hope Karma bites you in the ass with this, like it bit those Motors over the summer. (Keep in mind no disrespect to the Zoom Zoom Boom crew, but they were pre-warned, and chose to ignore the warnings and blew up there motors because of it) A-few were trying to make it pop Im sure (taking it to the limit) but in those cases they were only putting there cars at risk, no-one else.

THIS STUPID s*** PUTS OTHERS AT RISK!

Learn from others mistakes, and quite a few (including me) made the error of driving with all seasons compromised tires. Others this year have hit street signs Snow/Ice banks. and other s***.

And honestly M3 5MT, I dont give a s*** about you or your car, I care about the kid who isnt a part of this argument getting killed, because someone took your advice and put off getting the winter tires put on, he hits a patch of ice & goes and kills that kid as his parents drive him to school!

These things happen EVERY DAY because of IDIOTS LIKES YOU!

(IM sorry it's so harsh, but look at the news, car accidents are right next to Cancer as a leading cause of death IN AMERICA as well as Canada, and THIS MORON DOESNT THINK ITS IMPORTANT TO TAKE EVERY PREVENTATIVE STEP WE CAN)

PLEASE DONT LISTEN TO HIS STUPIDITY, GET SOME GOOD WINTER TIRES, AND DRIVE SAFE!

Oh and just to show you how much of a DUMB ASS YOU ARE Nokian makes friction tires for winter (They are winter tires, or "Nordic" as they put it) and the can be used in the summer, but under certain condition and providing the temp doesnt go higher thain aproximatly 5 degreese (but it not recomended, its even said to be unsafe, by them) (keep in MIND THESE ARE WINTER TIRES, NOT ALL SEASONS)

And the other tires they have are not all season but THREE SEASONS, JACK ASS!

It shows you dont even know your Ass from your elbow!

MsProtege, ok, we know your view on this, but no need to be so aggressive and definitely no need to insult others (and this also applies to others towards MSProtege).

Let's get back to constructive input or this thread will be closed.
