i have been having problems like everyone else has been having with not shifting into gears correctly and grinding .... well the mazda tech said my 3rd 4th and 5th gear syncros were going out....

well this past week my car decided to start poping out of 5th gear!!!!! also in 5th gear when i cruise from 1700-2300 rpm the car occassionally shutters or acts like it wants to shut off... i dont know if its a transmission problem or a fuel map problem.... maybe we have a hole in our fuel map...

has anyone else experienced this???

mazda better fix this or all hell is going to break loose!!!!!

im very pissed about the way the dealers are treating this situation also....

I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT MY FRIEND AT AN AUTOX TALKED TO A GUY THAT WORKED FOR MAZDA AND HE ADMITTED THAT MAZDA HAS BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS IN THE PROTEGE'S .... SO NOW I HAVE EVIDINCE THAT MAZDA WILL FIX MY DAMN CAR OR ELSE!!!!

sorry guys im venting a little .... ive been furious lately...

So let's pretend my tranny goes after warranty...how much for a better "new" tranny?

ive already had my 2nd and 3rd syncros and gears replaced twice. since then it has been good. but occasionaly wont go into 1st or Reverse intill i start rolling.

just to let u guys know, im almost at 20k and for some strange reason my tranny is working fine now:confused: well, i guess i have no complaints for the "magic" attributes of my tranny?

My dealership said that that is common with Mazda transmissions, I have had it back several times complaining about it. After the last visit, I said that the next time I was back it would be scattered so they would have to fix it. Mine will not go into 1st when it is cold. After driving for about 2 miles it is ok, also if shifting fast (not power shifting) it grinds from 1st to 2nd. I am glad for extended warranties!
It is a shame that instead of fixing the problem at symptoms, they insist on fixing it after it breaks. And why would they take your word for it? All too common I get 'our tech could not duplicate the problem'. I have been through mechanics school and fixed enough cars that someone competent knows from a description where to look for problems. OK sorry about the ranting, I am done now.

I am wondering if they built most of these cars on Mon or Fri.

Razhael, yours must be a Wed. car.

related question...

How can you tell if your sycros are going? I've talked to a couple of people that have p5's as well (off line) and they have also had several sycros replaced...I just want to know what to look for.
thanks fellas:)

You know what is funny about my situation... My engine blew right...and after the dealership takes it all apart they find that the tranny is also phucked...Well, after a long ass time of trying to get ahold of the Mazda rep. He contacts me and says that I abused the car. He goes on to say that the tires are worn excessivly(sp?) the clutch is worn, and 3rd-4th gears were phucked! Now since the rep. cries abuse, you would think that Mazda would try and tack on the tranny to this abuse claim...BUT he said that MAZDA would pay to fix the tranny!
So I am left wondering what kind of s*** is Mazda trying to cover up.
Hmm...Just something to think about.

The transmission and clutch on the Protege do seem to be the weakest link. The morning problems with the clutch feeling like it is glazed and shifting poorly still happens...I believe I just have either changed driving habits or have compensated for the problem much like one does with an older car.

I am really thinking of picking up the extended warranty before hitting 50k...the fact that the dealer wants to nick me $1100 for it doesn't make me happy, but who knows Mazda may have to GIVE extended warranties before that happens for the odd s*** that keeps popping up.

My car was built on 2/22/01...I checked...it was a Thursday.

Tranny

I too have had my MP3 in for tranny work recently. The dealership told me that the Syncros were whack. They also told me the parts were on a back order that was so backed up it was more convenient and timely to order a new tranny and swap it. Either way I was without my car for two weeks and I was going nuts, they do fortunately supply a rental car in the meantime as part of the warranty. But you have to be 25 here to use the rental and it costs you 7 dollars a day for insurance.

You guys really are scaring me. My car, which is over a year old now only has 4800 miles but the tranny works great.

I have to say it shifts better now than is ever has as well. Almost like it really needed to be broken in.

How so few miles, you ask? Well, I have a motorcycle I like to ride... and I work only a few miles from home.

But all the miles on my car are city stop and go so there is a lot of shifting going on all the time.

Yes, I do notice that on cold mornings it's a bit harder to get into 1st gear. But what I usually do is double clutch into 1st when I'm slowing down and am at about 2-3mph. It goes right in...

If not, a quick shift into 3rd then 1st and it goes right in. But it's done this since I got it. Also, reverse doesn't always go in but I've had it like that on all my cars. As you lightly hold it, you just let the car roll on it's own ever so slightly and it just slips in without a problem. Don't let out the clutch to let the car roll, it'll do bad things.

All other gear changes are fine... and second gear is getting BETTER. At first, it was slower going into gear .. you know, you go to shift and hold it for a second as it syncs up -- and then it goes in. Nowadays it goes in more quickly and easily.

I've never forced it into gear or slammed it. And I think it may be rewarding me by working better? It's not to say I don't drive hard, though! Normal 1-2 shift is about 4500-5000rpm ... other gears are about 4000rpm.

But I'm still worried.... I don't want this thing to crap out once the car is out of warrenty!!

UGH. Everything else about the car is good, in my opinion. I don't have any of the clunks and suspension noise ... but I did hear that windshield whistle at 95mph or whatever on the last trip I took.

tranny again

Took my car back to the dealership today. Clutch vibration this time. Mazda needs to do something about these trannys and quick. I am tired of having to strip my car down to stock so I can get my warranty work done every other week. At this rate I will be able to put my CAI on with my eyes shut within a month or two.

I have seen a few similair issues with my tranny, I was wondering if you guys think I should cancel by turbo order knowing this tranny will dye and I'll have to pay for it?
