My Official "Holy s***, the dealer is ripping me off" thread

I worked at a Honda Dealer for about 2 years so I know some of this info, but there are a few things in there I did not know about. Good Info.

The whole car selling and buying process for the average person is a royal pain in the ass!!!! You get ripped in whatever way you look at it.

Chris, you want to enlight us on what the black book value of a MSP with say 50,000 miles is?

So, everyone thinks they don't actually lose money in a sale?

If that is true, bullpoo. They do lose money on some sales. ;)

Thanks Topher for the good write up!! I am in the market for an SUV now so this really helps.

glad i could help. it gets old hearing everyone complaining about how dealers are ripping them off. hopefully, this will help everyone out.

That was an excellent write up, epecially the trade-in information. The black book that was referred to is usually the galves car value guide. You can sign up for a week's access or a single day, this is very helpful. You can find them on www.galves.com. Allways know what you want to pay before getting to the dealer, if you dont feel comfortable just leave. Dealers like to talk in a way that confuses you into thinking you got a good deal when you actually got ripped off. The line that pisses me off is "what will it take to make the deal today", the best way to negotiate in my opinion is over the phone or via email. They hate that, they allways want you to come in so they can railroad you into a deal. If you want the best deal, thats the way to do it. Of course comparison shop. I just purchased a Mazdaspeed6, and although this is my 5th new car in 5 years its never a pleasant experience. Those extra bulls*** fees like window etching and other crap, make sure you tell them you dont want that crap right off the bat. That way they cant give you the line that everyone pays it.

wow. you're the type of customer i hate. you can't spend $20-30K via the telephone or the web...if you do, shame on you. i wouldn't. i put less effort into a customer that wants to do business via the phone than i do someone that actually takes the time to come into the store. why? because they've taken the time to come in and see what i have to offer...and it's more than just a car...it's all about customer service...and as many trim levels and options that are out there, how do you know you're actually comparing the same two vehicles? and we don't try to get you here to "railroad" you into a deal...and the whole "what would it take" thing is to find out where your head is. for some people, it's retarded. "i want 10K for my '91 grand marquis with 190,000 miles on it." yeah, ok. but we're just trying to find out what you're thinking...face it, people don't open up with salesmen...so we have to make them. and as far as shopping...hell yeah, shop around. i don't care if people shop my price...hell, if they can get through another dealer's bulls***...more power to them...i don't do business that way because that's not how i want to be treated.

negotiating via the phone and web is just retarded. yeah, you may get a good price but you don't know who you're buying from...and i don't know about you, but to me that's important.

Who gives a s*** if I end up knowing you after a car sale or not?...What will you do for me?....I thank you for the informative write up, but come up Topher that last line made no damn sense at all.....

Want to know you MWHAHAHA why don't you just say.."I want to mindfuck you in person into buying my new car"

Nothing wrong with a phone or email sale. Actually some people are shy, and prefer it to face to face methods.

Others just hate the whole car buying experience.....(ughdance).

there's a lot of s*** that i do for customers that i don't have to do. i'll let a customer take a car if theirs is being worked on...i'll get the car detailed when they're finished. if they have to drive a long distance to get here (30 miles or so), i'll put gas in their car...i'll pay for their lunch...there's a ton of s*** you can do...if i take care of my customers, they'll come back and buy from me again.

so yes, my last statement did make sense.

You are a Dealer..why should we even trust what you say?...I mean no offense. i've had bad dealers put me off from the whole circus..

I don't like them, Never will....

You're afraid to make a purchase without a reassuring salesman to make you feel confident about dropping the coin for a new car... and you're calling him "retarded"? That's just plain ignorant! (weakest)

i don't care if you trust me or not...you can use this info if you want...it's up to you...but i am being honest. i don't think there is anything in my post that will hurt anyone on this forum when it comes to buying a car.

HuH? So NOT true. Being an Internet Sales Manager I know of what I speak. If someone calls or emails, and knows what they want, it's very easy. Fax an app out, fax it back, fax ins card. Boom done, I drive your vehicle to you and drop it off, explain how it works and that's it. An original app needs to be signed, that the only catch.
I'll tell you another thing, more and more people don't want to deal with the BS and they just do it all "online".
