I put in a cheap ebay shifter,(*grinding modification needed BTW)

Monsterknob ball

I wanted a spacer so I cut apart the stock knob & sawed off the neck part.

presto!

From the title and the little bit that I read, I was thinking the worst picture in my head, but after seeing the pic you took it doesn't look too bad.

I had the boot up under the ball but I didn't like my fingers banging into it. I like to grip AROUND the ball.

Looks good. Be warned though, when it's warm out, it'll store the heat conversely when it's cold it'll be b****'in freezing.

yeah i actually use my metal shiftknob to warm my house for the winter.

that thing gets hotter than the sun.

"Monsterknobs" claims their resin knob doesn't get too hot or too cold. I must say ,It was 90 degrees here in NY and it the thing was fine.

This ridge of material must be removed or the shifter will not push down into the housing. Maybe other manufacturers got it right but this one is off. I had to use a grinder. Also, you'll need a snap ring pliers. You can't get the old shifter out without it.

yep, grind off the lip and it'll go right into place. I suggest putting a good thick high temp grease on the ball though. I sprayed lithium grease on it and I've now gotten a few squeaks out of it. I'll put some axle grease on it soon.

As for the monster knob, I debated buying one. The resin should not get too hot or cold (like a cue ball) and is exactly what i'm looking for when I get rid of the stock leather knob.

I was really looking for the black Hurst-style knob with the 5-speed pattern on it. It's bigger (2 1/2" vs. 2" for the Monsterknob) ,but they don't make the thread we need. This one feels pretty good though.

i had a metal shift knob on my saturn, in the winter i had to leave my beanie over it to not freeze my hand to the ******* thing.
