i was in an accident last Sunday, long story short the other guy's insurance said that my car was a total loss. the estimate to fix my car was about $7,000 usd (10-30% body damage, most of my damage is in the suspension) so instead they going to give me a check for what my car is worth.

well, my question is, is it illegal to take parts out of my car before they give me a check and take the car away from me? for instance the intake manifold and some other mechanical parts?

Check with wherever the car sits.

Some mechanics will let you take whatever you want, as long as it still rolls (that is if it didn't run to start with)

If it ran, it needs to still run when they take it away

Also, look into what it costs to buy the car back from the insurance.

You could then part it out, if it's worth salvaging

If you have a lot of $$ in mods, and place to store the car for a little bit then buy the car back. It should not cost very much. Then you can do what ever you want with the car.

+2 if you can part it out....usually around a grand to buy it back and if you got stuff you can make that easy

the car is sitting in front of my house.......thats why i was asking if i can take some parts out before they come and pick it up

I just went through this with my subie. They wouldn't let me take $1500 in suspension bits out. :(

well, like i said everything is good except some body damage and the suspension...............everything else under the hood is good, the car turns on and everything only big problem is the front two wheels suspension.......

When my Thunderbird was totalled, I had it towed from the yard to my apartmet complex, where I removed my CAI, clear corner markers, headlights and the like, replacing them with the stock parts. As long as you can replace them with something, don't ask, just pull them off. They won't give you any more with them on the car, so you might as well have them for part-out. Sorry about your car...what happened?
