My MazdaSpeed Protege

Hey everyone. I just purchased my spicy orange MSP Friday. I was wondering about others who also have MSP's and anything unusual you too may have encountered or other mods you found.
I live in TN, and heard that our dealership had an MSP in the showroom. I called Friday morning and asked if I could test drive it. The salesman told me to give him an hour or so to get it out of the showroom and there would be no problem. Needless to say after seeing it in person, I fell in love with it. I have to say that it isn't that fast, but I knew that could be fixed. It handles wonderfully and begs to be autocrossed. All the features of this car makes it worth buying. The fact that it comes with a decent stereo, 17's, and other goodies inside, make a few less mods that I would have done anyway. Besides that, since I was the first to buy one here, the dealer gave me the complete display including the Mazdaspeed floormat and neon sign. (they were great salesmen)
I also have an Acura Integra GSR turbo. I guess that is why the MSP doesn't feel that fast to me. The MSP feels like my GSR did when it was stock. Driving my MSP around, I noticed it has a bit of a lag when you get on it (keeping in mind that I realize I am still breaking it in and am not fully getting on it). It also lacks that top of the gear pull that I love about any VTec motor. I am sure it won't be long before thay have a recall to reprogram the computers and fix this problem. I did notice that my GSR intake fits perfectly on my MSP by just a couple of screws. I also had to turn the boost up just slightly ( you can't turn it up too far because there is a factory limiter on it and until someone makes a adaptor for it, your stuck with only having about 5 or 6 pounds of play) The other thing I had to do was put an aftermarket blow off valve because the stock one is way too small to work like it should. I will soon be changing out the exhaust and putting a bigger intercooler on it which will increase the hp by 50. (thanks Superstreet!) . I am also going to replace all that plastic piping which will help too. I have also ordered a boost guage and turbo timer for it as well. Everything I have done can quickly be taken off and replaced stock in the need I have to take my car in the the dealership. They also told me that by replacing my exhaust would only void the warrenty on the exhaust
Anyway, I love my car. It is fun to drive and looks great.

How did you change the BOV? there was speculation in other threads that the stock BOV could not be removed easily.

Have you actually tried? There was no problem at all with room. I don't get why no one can figure it out. It went right on. I didn't have to modify anything or change anything. It went on, it works perfectly, just like it should. Took 5 minutes. When I get home from work tonight, I will be glad to e-mail anyone a pic of it on if it would help. I mean if a girl can do it.......lol

I have not tried it, I would if I had my car though, but thats another story... lol You are very lucky because there are lots of people on here that have been waiting months for their cars, I put my deposit down in the end of september and I still have no idea when I will get it :(

5 minutes eh! well thats good news for me if it swaps out easy, that solves one of the problems, is it louder than the stock one? from what I have read you can barely hear the stock BOV

if you get pics I am sure everyone would love to see them, to be honest I dont even know where the BOV even is on this car... lol

The one i put on is ALOT louder than the stock. You couldn't hear the stock one at all. Now it actually sounds like it has a turbo. I would definately recommend changing it out. It is really easy, so when you get your car, I am sure you will figure it out. I hope you get it soon!

QuChick,
By putting on "an aftermarket blow off valve because the stock one is way too small to work like it should" change your warranty? Just curious as I was reading your most excellent post.

And howabout the intercooler change also?

No way are you getting 50hp out of an intercooler unless you crank the boost WAY up as well. Furthermore, being that the T25 is a small turbo, you'll likely add more TQ than HP, being that it starts running out of juice past 5252. Know what I mean?

BTW, welcome to the boards, congrats on your car!

Ok, for the first question, nothing will viod the warrenty if you put it back stock before you bring it back to the dealer. As long as your not bringing it back to the dealer because you messed it up. Every dealer is different, just ask them what things would and would not void your warrenty. Just like someone elso said, if you turn your boost up too high and blow up your motor, don't expect your warrenty to cover it!
Secondly to kooldino. If you can get your hands on the October 02 edition of Superstreet magazine, there is an excellent write up on the MSP. If you read it, you will see that what I am saying is true without even turning the boost up at all. The intercooler on the car now is tiny. It is the same one on the turbo deisel in europe. Anyone knows that a larger intercooler on a turbo car will gain more HP. Also look at the downpipe on your MSP. even changing the exhaust from the cat back will give you more hp. But don't take my word on it. Find the mag and listen to the experts. They give several tips on making your car faster. And that was their 50hp quote. Not mine!

i know better breatinh is gonna help a lot. but 50 hp from a FMIC and downpipe/exhaust..........zoinks!

did super street actually perform these mods on the prototype car they had to test?

seems this board is primarily SCC readers

Note to all you MSP'rs our there. You will not see an increase of 50hp on your MSP by changing the intercooler and exhaust alone. If anyone wants a 50hp increase, they should add a larger turbo to their list of future mods along with some sort of fuel control. But hey, if you think you can do it....go for it. Maybe by thinking you can get more power, you can "will" more power. hehe Jus playing. Although it's highly doubtful that anyone will see that kind of increase, I have heard of stranger things happening.

One being a certain member on this message forum believing that 6.5 PSI was enough boost that give an LS Integra 265whp...cough cough.....NCMP3.....cough cough hehe

Post pics Shannan. You can upload them directly to this board. Just click on "user cp" and then "manage files" (or just click this link) and upload any pics you have. We'd all really like to see them.

what kind of intake bolted right on to the msp???? is the poece about the msp on superstreet's website???

Please buy a boost gauge and install it. I'm dying to know the "STOCK" maximum boost. I'm still saying it's 5 to 6psi. If you want a gauge pod, a company makes one that will replace the top part of your steering column. Let me know if you are interested and I'll find the site.

TheMan (Edwin) has the shop manual or info or something and says it's 9psi.
What is the boost level set to on the MazdaSpeed Proteg?
Under normal conditions, it is set to 9 psi (0.62bar) and is controlled via a mechanical wastegate. When a knock is detected (even if it is not due to low octane fuel), ignition timing and fuel are both cut back at the same time.

Jeez turbo integra and a msp and mods her cars herself. sounds like my kind a girl. Since i'm in NC and your in TN we should meet half way and let me try to keep up on the curvy mountain roads
