My impressions: long-reach vs short reach plugs

I bought my P5 with 67k a year ago. I replaced the Champion plugs with NKG Vpowers of the long reach variety based on suggestions here, as well as the wires.

The Champion plugs were pretty black, and of course the new long-reach NKG's and wires made a difference, so I could not compare to good short reach plugs. Everything was great, except I did notice some knocking when going up steep hills sometimes; slight, but there.

One year and 13k later, I just threw new plugs in. I used NKG short-reach. The old plugs looked in very good condition, a bit of white residue, but pretty damn clean (not black, like the champions). After driving for a couple days, my impressions are these:

1) judging by my superb butt dyno, the car doesn't pull as hard. If I had to put a number to it, I'd say 5-10% less. Obviously that's highly inaccurate, but that's the feeling.

2) Idle is just fine. Obviously, the Champion plugs were trashed, and new long or short reach plugs would've helped out. I don't see a difference between the two.

3) No pinging! Lugging up a hill, not a peep. 'Nuff said!

So though I did enjoy the long-reach plugs, and do feel they added a bit, if only subjectively (hell, everything is subjective with these cars, how can something so low-rent and slow be so awesome?!); however, I'd like to avoid pinging, and so I will stay with the short-reach plugs.

Maybe they were just the plugs you used. Different plugs react differently to certain motors. What was the part number for the NGK plugs you used? I might give the long reach ones a try soon.

Which, the long reach? They were the 626 ones, just search 'long plugs' and it'll come up.

Which heat range? ZFR5 or ZFR6s? I've run the ZFR5s for years without any pinging or any other issue. The ZFR6s are colder plug. IIRC, the turbo guys use the colder plugs. Also running 1.8 coils but did have ZFR5s for awhile with the 2.0 coils. Never any issue with either coil setup.

It was said that the long reach plugs were bad for turbo. They were good for cold starts and idle, but were bad when entering boost

I used to have long reach but on my recent change went back to short reach. Really didn't notice a difference... the car seems to have just a slightly more growly sound with the long reach when cold. The old ones looked in pretty good shape too. Gas mileage hasn't changed either.

Sure, 10k +. I am curious too. I run only the midgrade gas now, and it's solved all detonation issues in all temps, so I'm curious to see how the long reach behave with it.

Hey Poison can you post exactly which plugs and wires you bought - short plugs.

I may have misunderstood, but which short plugs did you use?

I've been using BKR5E-11 for years without any issues? What am i missing.... long vs short?

Those are the regular, spec'd plugs. They are ref'd to as short reach here. The ZFR5F-11s are just a bit longer electrode than the BKR5s. They smooth out the idle a bit. They work good with the 1.8 coil setup that some use.

Use standard plugs not shorter or longer, NGK VPower, colder plugs are good if you've got some preignition or detonation which you shouldn't ever have on a well maintained NA FSDE. The hotter plugs can cause preignition, staying hot and firing the charge early.Colder plugs are good for high RPM use, freeway, race etc..
