my Idle (plz help)

thats basically what was wrong with my car. the plugs were HORRIBLE. now it runs like brand new, yay!

NGK ZFR5F-11 long reach plugs in mine. NGK.com, 2.52 each. Use 2000 protege with 1.6l on their site.
I heard from somewhere that this "shuddering" is due to the EGR valve going bad. My P5 has been doing this more and more lately, mainly when I'm sitting at a light. It started around 90K miles and has gradually gotten worse. I'm at 119K now.
I'm hesitant to spend the $$ until I know for sure what the problem is... Tune up w/ plugs doesn't make it go away.

clean your EGR then...it only takes a 5 dollar bottle of brake kleen...and you have been letting this go on for 30,000 miles? That could be almost 2.5 - 3 years...maybe its time you just took the vice off your wallet...
i cleaned my egr, what should i use as lubricant? i used liquid wrench...
basically i was driving home from work last night, and i started the car up, and as i started driving off, and i got to the stop light my idle goes crazy, up and down several times, then just dies.

Sounds like your MAF might be bad...if you already changed your plugs correctly, I would say get some maf cleaner and see what happens...It's a crap shoot at this point...Maybe seafoam it also (the engine, not the maf!)
i havent changed my plugs yet.
what maf cleaner would i use? i read somewhere that i can use something electronic cleaner or something like that, i cant remember?
how do i clean it? just spray it?
I bought some MAF cleaner at Advanced auto. You take the MAF off and using the tube that comes with the can of cleaner you carefully clean the wire that hangs down in there. I know there's a thread in the how to section. The one thing that is really stressed is that you have to make sure that it's completely dry before putting it bad together.
The EGRs that are failing..is it the solenoid that is going bad? I took mine off recently and cleaned it with Deep Creep. The valve moved freely and all that. So if it is that going bad then it would have to be the solenoid.

it isnt just cleaning out your egr valve, the egr port in the intake manifold gets clogged its oddly shaped. when you remove your egr valve which is two bolts inspect it , if its bad just replace it and with a new gasket, next get soft wire clothes hanger &/ pipe cleaner with carb cleaner and pick inside the port small hole where u removed the egr. its difficult to get something in there but just do it and with carb cleaner attempt to spray insidepick away an clean best as possible.
ideal thing to due is remove the intake but do the best u can protege suffer from this carbon build up it gets annoying and expect it every couple years

I addition to plugs, coil packs and EGR, get a cheep can of carb cleaner and spray it around your intake manifold. If you hear the idle go up, you have an intake gasket leak.
I know this because a buddy of mine worked on a P5 that had a rough idle and while he was trouble shooting checked this and found a leak. Apparently this is a common problem with Proteges in general.
When it happened to me, mine was the EGR. I had a piece of metal hoilding it open from when I modified the pipe to fit my header.
With in regaurds to the EGR, cleaning it doesn't always help. Some times they just go bad and need to be replaced.

Also, when changing your EGR:
1. put the front of your car on jack stands
2. go to the drivers side front wheel and remove the tire
3. locate the EGR and remove it
From this possition it is east to get to. Whatever you do, don't try doing it from the engine bay area. It's a b**** to get to

have you checked all the sensors incorporated into the exhaust? i used to have the same problem until i put the 2 3/4 inch exhaust on. then i replaced all the sensors underneath the car. havent had a problem since. alot of people dont even think about doing this but your exhaust sensors help to control your intake and fuel input. if your car is doing this and you have emissions in your location it is highly likely you will fail due to co2 readings.
