the p5 fog lamps havent really satisfied me. It seems they only light up the ground like 2 ft in front of the car. What can I do to make them brighter. I dont want to get HID, but wouldnt mind getting new bulbs. Should I also get a new cover the the fog lamp housing? any ideas?

Theres an adjustment bolt in on the fog bracket behind the front bumper that lets you tilt the fog up/down when loosened. You can aim it up to see if its what you want or you could always change the bulbs out. This is free though so try it first.

'Fog' lights where originally designed to be mounted low to illuminate the ground under the fog line.

Factory provided 'driving' lights don't usually do much, if you turn your 'fogs' on and off on a dark road, you will notice that they kind of illuminate the sides, right in front of the car.

You can switch the bulbs, but it won't do much, except looks better. Tilting them won't do much either, unless daKiNeP5 has gotten positve results.

Even if you upgrade the entire thing, low mounted drving lights are more for throwing light to the sides. For Any good forward illumination you need to mount new lamps above the bumper line.

That's why they're fog lamps; they aren't intended to shine more than that.

PIAA makes the 40 series and apparently they fit the Protege5 stock fogs just right: http://www.piaa.com/Lamps/Lamp-pages/40rnd.html

I reaimed my fog lights up and they throw light further up the road now and still light up the shoulders of the road. I have overlays on them and can see the difference going down the road at night and in foggy weather.

This is just the fogs with out headlights

DO NOT "adjust" the fog. They are pointed down for a reason. You'll end up blinding people and perhaps getting a little love and attention from the police.

you can adjust them slightly. operative word being 'slightly.' if you raise them too much you will piss other people off by blinding them.

Where's the article that said our fogs shined the furthest out of like 30 cars tested? I wouldn't adjust them. At most get some new bulbs.

I raised them up along with a few other MAZDASPORTS members and there is no blinding problems of on coming traffic at night. We even take night runs and the raised fogs don't blind you from the rear view mirror. They are still not as bright as the low beams.

If you raised the fogs and got a hotter bulb then maybe you would have problems, but no blinding problems with the stock wattage bulbs.

That article was not about the fogs but the regular low beams

I adjusted my fogs but not up. For some reason they were pointed too high so I lowered them and they light up the road immediately in front of my car and to the sides a bit.

I've always been wondering about this but do yellow colored fogs work better than stock or white colored ones?

Thats funny mad hatter that you said that about our lights. just the other morning(its pitch black when i got to work) i was behind a co-worker and he asked if i had upgraded my headlights because he said the were quite bright and i said no they are stock. he was definately surprised. the only reason i would raise the lights wether fogs or low beams is if you lower your car a lot. otherwise don't mess it up. like other people said you'll piss people and the cops off.

fogs

the P5 fogs aren't anything special, but here is what i did i replaced the bulbs with a white bulbs and then i took steel wool and rubbed down the outside of the lens on each fog, Then used duplicast yellow metallic paint and applied 2 coats and my fogs have a great yellow color. the good thing about the paint is its high temp. up to 500degrees. so it doesn't burn like the fog overlays a lot of people have used.

How did you get you fog lights on only and not also your headlights?

the fog-light mod. See the How-to section for instructions.

Edit: Oh, I see you just joined. Welcome!! You need to check out the how-to section. When I first joined, I looked at nothing but the How-to section for about 2 months. The fog-light mod only involves splicing/tapping a wire or two. Not too hard. There's also other useful mods, such as how to shut your door chime up permanently, and the grounding kit.
