My First Oil Change Was a Failure!

When you get a chance, please post a picture of your Fumoto Valve.

I'm coming up on my next oil change, maybe another 500 miles (I do it every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1).

I'm not sure what pic you are looking for but these might help?.

I use Ford Motorcraft oil (semi-synthetic) and change every 5,000. Under normal driving conditions, Mobile 1 could last a little longer but 5K interval is easy to remember.

i know its an old thread... but i got my 2009 mazda 1.8 ts2 last week.

jacked it up today and saw that the under tray is cracked in two places. The nuts near the cracks wouldn't come off (just keep on spinning). Obviously the 'mechanics' who previously serviced it just tried forcing the tray off and tore it. And this car has a full dealer approved service history!

Anyway, managed to get the nuts off after grabbing the bolt at the top with my other arm and a spanner (a yoga master would've been proud of the moves i had to do)

gonna try and get a new tray from the company i bought it from as they gave a 1 year warranty. not sure they'll cover this though.

anyone know of the part numbers to replace the hinge/nut combination at the top?

Not sure about the UK but in the states, auto parts stores like NAPA should have replacements. You can also jut call you local dealer for the part/price.

Another interesting point, I've since upgraded from the Sport to a GT (both '08) but the GT uses all new revised/integrated nut whereas the Sport had a mishmash of old and new. I'm guessing the assembly line was in the middle of changing them on my previous car!?...

in case anyone is interest the part number for the dodgy clips is BR5S-56-496

bloody expensive though.... smacks of the old money making strategy 'use a crappy part that will fail then charge dearly for replacement'.. swines!

Just did my oil change on my 2010 5 and went with Amsoil 25,000 mile signature series. I shall see how well it preforms.

Look, I have 36k on my 2010 mazda5, and I have never changed the oil myself. I have side skirts, so I have not even rotated the tires myself. I got new tires from the dealer on a special, so then I get free tire rotation, and also the oil change is about $30 (at the dealer). I change every 5k. I do however check the tire pressure, if the oil cap is on properly, and also under the car to make sure the tray is properly attached. If it's hanging I would just go to dealer and complain, as they are the only ones that ever did oil changes. Other then replacing rear shocks under warranty, there has been nothing else wrong with the car.
Now, let's talk about the 2006 VW Jetta that I used to own, and purchased brand new (Mexican made POS, and the seed of the Devil). Headlights would burn out, check engine light came on, tires cupped, driver door sagged, speakers stopped working. Clutch was jerky, made awful noise when first started, could not open gas tank, indoor lighting failed randomly, door material wore off, paint on radio wore off. The dealer would always blame it on wear and tear, abuse by customer, or lack of maintenance, even though I made sure that they perform the ripoff service interval that ranged between $300-500 every 10k.
I hope this makes you feel a little better, and maybe you will think about MZ5 differently, which I came to love over time, as I did not put any money into it whatsoever. Look at it this way, it's just a plastic tray, you don't necessarily need it. Put a hole in it, get a metal or plastic bracket, and drill a hole or buy one of these that already have a hole, and just attach it that way. it's really not a big deal. And honestly, I used to do all my oil changes myself, but I stopped as I turned 30. I still do my wife's 2007 civic, because you can literally do it without even jacking up the car.

The cover really isn't that bad, I don't know why everybody seems to loathe it so much. I did my last oil change in around 30 minutes and I wasn't rushing it.

I dont think its that the cover is so bad, its that the hole thats there doesn't help and is in the way ultimately. Just my $.02

For clarification, this was not my "first" oil change, only on this car. More importantly, this was not about the tray and I think folks are missing the point in post #19, which I still standby but can now better accept, esp with a GT. I would not want the Sport trim again.

In case anyone <'09 owner want to fix that hole, Dollar store push-up box cutter is all you need to enlarge the hole b/c the tray is made of a soft/pliable plastic. You can probably enlarge the hole while the oil is draining. Just make sure you trace a line for cutting boundaries.

True, I just changed the oil on my 5 for the first time this past week and it was a breeze.

You want a pain-in-the-ass oil change? Buy a Crossfire.
