My custom exhaust

OKay well today i visited a reputable shop and we talked about making a downpipe and catback for my car. The guy thinks its 2" piping, we are gonna measure it with a caliper on monday. However if it is, im going with 2.5 inch all the way back. he said legally it canot leave the shop with no cats so we are going to leave the second cat in place but hes gonna make me a 2.5 inch test pipe to put in , in place of the 2nd cat, all together the job is going to run about 500-600 dollars, I am going to use a magnaflow muffler. How do u think this will perform/sound>? suggesstions, comments?

Jon

Seems pretty expensive for a custom setup with 2.5" piping. I have a custom setup with an APEXi N1 turbo muffler & mine was only $250 for everything. I could understand about 350-400 max, but for your price, you could almost buy the Billet Design 3" turbo-back.

when i got my custom exhaust, i measured the stock one while it was in pieces. this is what i found.

the ID of the piping ranged from approximately:

1 11/16 - 2 3/8 inches = 1.6875" - 2.375" = 42.8625 mm - 60.325 mm

500-600? man that's a pretty wide range. but i guess if it's made out of stainless steel and it's a true turboback, not just midpipe back, then that's a really good deal. check out the exhaust thread i started if you wanna hear how a magnaflow CAN sound. your mods may be different from the one the car has in the vid but it'll prolly sound pretty close.

yeah that sounds a bit pricey. I went to a very reputable local muffler shop and the guy there told me he can do a full turbo back setup from the S-pipe back for $2-300 if I supply my own muffler. He is also doing 3" piping all the way back with 0 cats. He said it is illegal but as long as I pay cash he has no problem hooking it up. So I would look around a bit more to see if you could find a better deal cause that sounds very pricey.

Dear god, why are you going with 3" piping? I don't want to rehash this discussion since it's been talked about MANY times but even Flyin Miata or Spool said that there are no larger gains out of a 3" off of the stock T25. Just wondering why you'd do that when a 2.5" will do just as good, if not better, than a larger diameter.

Which is why I went with 2.5" :D

i have custom exaust as well, 3 inch, no cats, apexi N1 muffler.. sounds great,
muffler = $175
piping = $120 so total is $295, but i guess stainless steel is expensive stuff?

btw, they said something about not being able to get all the way to the turbo and cant make flanges or something, my friend said i needed a s-pipe or something?

just to let you know I wanted to get the HKS Carbon TI exhaust muffler which only comes in 3" inlet piping so I really dont see anything wrong with goin in this direction. I havent heard anything bad about 3" piping so what seems to be the problem. If there are any major dissadvantages to 3" piping please inform me but from what I have read its really just preference and that there is no significant gain either way between 2.5 and 3". But if you know something I dont please do tell.

Also ION makes there turbo back exhaust with 3" piping. So why would they do this if 2.5 is so much better. billet designs exhaust is 3" too. dont see a major difference between 2.5 and 3". also why are theses companys making 3" exhaust if 2.5" is better? I am just trying to get some more info because I havent heard any solid evidence eitherway with the two different diameter exhaust pipings.

They probably couldn't make the flange to connect to the turbo which is what the s-pipe does.

Your friend was right, if you want a true turbo back exhaust then you will need to get an aftermarket s-pipe..I think iON made one, but I am not sure if they sell it seperately from their turbo back system.

The s-pipe is a very small portion of the exhaust, so you probably won't notice TOO much of a difference with the stock one left on there.

The same reason people buy the Injen CAI. People "believe" certain things and companies go after the popular belief. There's absolutely no reason you need a 3" exhaust on a our setup. None. Why do they market it? Because bigger is better, right?

I hate to say but search around for like "exhaust size", "2.5" or "3 inch".. Whatever you can to find threads about this discussion.

^^^^
at the same time, if you wanna go 3", you're pretty much only hurting your pocket book. there's no need to but if you WANT to, go right ahead. besides, the hks carbon-ti muffler looks badass :).

true. I just want people to know that they don't have to pay more for 3" because there's really no need to.

To the people getting custom exhaust: how are the bends looking like? And are they welding the new piping to a little section of the stock piping next to the flanges or do they give you new flanges so it can be taken off?

the bends on my were all mandrel bend sections cut to length. they cut the stock piping just beyond the flange that bolts the second cat to the rest of the exhaust. check the exhaust thread for a link to pics of mine.

I had a HKS Carbon Fiber Muffler, and the muffler shop help me put a 2.5inch cat back, and he put a reducer so it fit the back of the muffler. They put new flanges so I can bolt on to the cat, and an extra set of flanges toward the back section of the pipe so I can take the muffler off too easlier. They charge me $170 for the labor.

my s-pipe back exhaust is gettin fabed up this wenesday....gonna be ss 3" from the s-pipe back with new ss flange's (2 piece design) , ss hangers and new gaskets, also im gonna run the stock two 02 bungs plus a thrid for a wideband hook up....total with magnaflow muffler is 700 bucks.....i didnt wanna cut up anything on thr stock system incase i have to throw it back on if i sell the car or whatever...so they are replacing everything with ss pieces....ill have pics up wenesday nite after its all said and done....this shop said they would be interested in marketing the exhaust if there is a market for it.....also ill may TRUE dynapack numbers at stock boost once its on

edit - also this shop said the work of gettin the s-pipe replaced is far too much to warrenty doing it....its better to go s-pipe back incase u plan to upgrade the turbo and manifold and relocate the turbo over away from the a/c condensor so u have room to fit a nice 3" s-pipe

I spent around 900.00 for my exhaust the custom fabbed a flange for the down pipe and flex connecter to my cat. drilled for the bung and y piped it back to a dual exhaust with 2 tsudo mufflers and thats all 2.5" turbo back
