My car is making a terrible noise when I try to start it - what's going on?

The mechanic says piston #4 is broken and as a result a bunch of other stuff is broken too. I need a new engine. It will cost $1500 to $2000.

The piston is broken? Mate, take your car to someone else. And for $2000 you can just about pull a KL in it.

Are you handy with tools, or have any close friends who could help you with a swap? It's really not hard. Just nuts and bolts. If you can turn a wrench clockwise and counter-clockwise you can swap your own motor. I'm not trying to be a dick, I just hate when mechanics are like "Your engine is toast, it will be one million dollars please." Then again, I haven't taken any of my cars to a mechanic in about 8 years... If you have a place to work and some hand tools you can make it happen. Don't get discouraged. :)

Yeah John if you look at my post about my noise coming from my car you can tell its not the bottom end. I had 2 "mechanics" tell me I need a new motor. All I need is a new head. Thanks to these guys and this board ore a simple fix.

I've been told the same thing. For something that costs $600 at a junk yard. You would think they would turbo the mf'er.

All fixed. Used engine with 75k, new gaskets and seals, a new engine mount, new clutch, new hoses, new timing belt, water pump, oil change, fluids etc. Car is running like champ.

Your old engine is now on eBay or Craigslist
