My 84 VW Build

:
Rust Bucket
In 1980-something my dad bought a brand new 1984 Rabbit GTI off the lot, it was stock for a while, then he added a techtonics exhaust, g-grind cam, suspension upgrades, sway bars..etc.
until in 2002 he was driving it and hit a pothole, with over 200k miles on the clock he decided to park the car and buy a 2002 Mazda protege 5, which is now my car, im only 17 btw
Well now im takin a class sort of like autotech in highschool cept its offered at a community college and i get it for free :) well i decided to rebuild the engine for my dad while hes in Kuwait as a contractor....
I Dont have any pics of it as it sits now but ill get those later on today...transmission and the engine are now sitting on a table in the shop, as of now i ordered:
*AutoTech:
2.0 stroker kit with a 10.5:1 comp ratio(Bored 4mm over)
286 Degree Cam
Adjustable Cam Gear
Lightweight Intermediate Shaft Pulley
Sport Tuned Valve Springs
*New Valve Guides
*New Valve Seals
*New Water Pump
*New Radiator
*New Distributor
*SportTuned Baffled Steel Oil Pan (already on car)

and im not done yet, still to come is
*Mk2 Exhaust Mani
*Techtonics Custom Downpipe for ^
*SS Techtonics 2.5" exhaust
*New Front Calipers
*Brembo Front Brake Calipers

and other various parts

right now all the parts that can be sandblasted and painted, are. Intake mani, engine mounts, and so on

got some rust on the car but its not as bad as i thought it would be for an 84
pics to come later on but just to show you what it looks like i found a pic of one online, its the american model but it has the euro front end conversion.
its looks like this, cept it has the quad headlights and its black and in horribe shape in comparison lol

Subbing to this thread. I love the 80's VW's

I was VERY tempted to pick up an oldschool bug and swap the motor

ahhh man, i have alot of work to do on this thing
hopefully it'll be worth it. but tell me what u guys think!!

expected hp: 160ish at the wheels for a aprox. 2000lb car, interior is fully gutted, the dash is still there though
only putting 2 racing seats back in since this wont really be a daily driver, people have ran 12's in this car NA, no carbs turbo or anythng
so i should be at the 14 mark easy, or at least hopefully lol

looks promising! That car has some serious potential!

I'll be keeping tabs on this thread!!

So, you're building for the 1/4 mile?

Would be sooooo much more fun as an autoxer or road course car

Subbing.....

Good luck man. It does look like alot of work but should be fun and rewarding. Keep us posted and keep the pics coming.

no im building it as a track car that can be daily driven, its going to have every imaginable brace and bar that they make for it,
i may take it to the drag strip sometimes but its mostly for autox or race track use
at least those are the plans lol

Awesome car. I'm looking forward to seeing how the car turns out. When you are done you need to come help me with my '84 GTi. it's been sitting in my driveway for several years now untouched.

Looks like that paint could be wheeled out. You are not doing anything Neuspeed? Have you checked out Rabbit hutch for any information or suggestions? That euro grill you have used to be worth some money back in the day. I built an 88 GTI back in 94. I did a VR6 swap though. Good luck and keep us posted, interested to see how it turns out.

not exactly sure what u mean by wheeled out, im repainting the whole car inside and out

but i already have the neuspeed throttle body and the neuspeed spacer thingy, forgot what its called lol but they were existing mods so i didnt mention them

i also have a neuspeed strut bar and im ordering the rear sway
have an adjustable front tie bar, not sure what brand its covered in filth

but thanks everybody for the support, ill try to update it regularly but i doubt ill have any news soon, getting it bored is 1st on the list and its the 3rd block in line to get bored so...now we wait

Are the rabbits as easy to put on their side as my old 85 jetta? BTW I loved that little 8v 4 banger! No power but was smooth and fun to drive for some reason or another.

and the gas mileage wasn't bad either ;)

You know I have no idea how good the gas milage was on that thing.. The odometer stopped working. I wish I could find another gold wolfsberg edition with that same 8 valve 4 banger in it for a decent price. I did find one but they wanted 4 grand for an 85!

Very cool. I had an '84 Rabbit 4-Door way back when. Swapped in an ABA 2.0L and matching 5-speed. It was a fun car, even though it never ran right.
