the other day i got off from work and went to my car and there was a huge crack on the windshield. i was pissed..and checked it out and it was a small dent in the glass, hence the cracked windshield. ( i will post pics later).. but does anyone know whats a good way to handle this situation? do i take it to the dealer? or have a autoglass company fix it? etc etc...

has anyone have gotten the windshield replaced? if so, would it be a crap load of $$ to be fixed at the dealership?

thanks for you insight

damn..i heard something about insurance deductible can be useful? i dont know much about these kind of things....

400 dollars? thats what i thought it would run me...you think the quality of the dealership would differ?

yeah dont go the dealership. In past experiences with my old Mitsu's and Honda's i found out that they end up calling the indy glass company repairemen to come in and fix your car. I then started going to the glass repairmen directly. Find a few numbers out of the phone book and call them all for a quote. Most will drive to you and fix the windshield in your driveway (or wherever you park your car) If you go to the dealerships all they will end up doing is charging you too much for the exact same work.
FYI my dealership wanted to charge me $780 for my rear left window on my mitsu and the glass repair people were only charging $210.

what the dealership doesn't tell u is that you are getting the same windshield if you were to contact a private windshield installer. the dealer doesn't install it themselves they have contracted some local windhield installer to do all their windshield work for them. so either way you will not get a windshield that has the "mazda" logo on it, unless they order that from japan and it will cost maybe three times as much.

its best to call around and get the best price possible. if you go to the dealer they will charge you extra for having them call the windshield installer and having it done at their place. in other words you're paying extra $$$ for nothing.

I think price will depend if you have rain sensors and auto climate control than it will be even more expensive. Mazda windshield glass will run about $250 (no sensors) + labour. Just go to the reputable glass shop and get their quote. Aftermarket glass is the same quality as Mazda.

On the side note I got a crack on my Protege this weekend as well. The crack is around 4 inches long but glass shop said I'll have to replace windshield or just wait and see if it will spread. I called a few places and they all said they can't repair though after browsing internet it seems there are lot of shops who provide repair of cracks up to 6 inches and longer, but unfortunately not in my area. I guess I'll wait since it's on the lower passenger side.

Had a one replace on a ranger a few years back, my ins. pay for it because of no-fault in state of florida. Also my rates didn't go up because of it, check you ins. company if your state has a no-fault on your policy. If not don't go to the dealer they will charge you a arm and a leg for something you can do much more cheaper. Good luck zoomzoom

Mine broke the first week I had the car!

In SC, glass is deductible free so the insurance pays 100% of the cost. Plus, it does not go on your insurance record and does not raise your premium!

I was surprised that the glass company had it in stock. I called on Monday, they had it replaced on Wednesday.

Proteg owners, the past few years, who had windshields replaced because of cracks, from passing cars throwing up gravel and/or rocks in tires, found the replacement windshields were thicker glass than the OEM windshields on their cars. Less wind noise was a big plus. Mazda uses thinner glass to reduce weight, which may be the reason your windshield cracked or maybe it twisted going over rough roads. In any case go to an independent glass shop, not the dealer.
