My 5 got hit by the neighbor.

2012 Mazda5 Touring
Long story short: Wife backed out of the garage and into the street, knucklehead neighbor (only rental in the neighborhood, house is a mess) backed down his driveway and hit my 5 in the passenger rear quarter panel. Guy gives me his insurance card, I take a quick pic w/my phone and run off for a dental appointment. Come to find out later, his insurance is lapsed and was broadform; luckily for me, having worked in insurance, I always carry uninsured motorist...so at most, I'm out $100 (my carrier will attempt to recover and WA requires any monies recovered be paid out first to insured to cover deductible).

Only bright spot (besides no injuries), is that the local Mazda dealership is a preferred shop for my insurance carrier; sort of nice that Mazda will be repairing my Mazda...if anyone should get a repair right, it should be them. Still no word from the shop on the estimate, but I told them to go ahead and fix it regardless. Being as the rear bumper cover will need replacing, who knows how long it'll take to get it; one of the downsides to the 5 is "rarity," for lack of a better word. As far as sheet metal, I don't know what sort of voodoo-magic they'll have to do to fix that. I'm attaching some crappy cell phone pics, if anyone is interested.

Once I get the estimate total, I'll post it here...just so one can get an idea of how much a rear bumper & quarter repair will cost for a 2012+ 5.

Sorry to hear about the accident!
My in-law's 5 was rear ended within the first week. One thing to watch out for is the repaint of the new bumper cover. The black section in the bottom and the painted section are all one piece, so it's up to the shop to mask the black section when they paint the cover. Our shop didn't get it quite perfect, so you can see an imperfect line. It does look a bit tricky to mask so I don't blame them. Would be much better if Mazda did separate pieces for the black and painted parts, like many other cars.

First and foremost, sorry this had happened. If it was me, I probably would have strangled the guy. Anyway, dealer would most likely use new panels, including bumper. You're right, Mazda parts are expensive compared to something like Honda parts where they get a lot of parts made here in the States; not Mazda, they don't have factory here so the dealer imports in directly from Japan. Make sure that you get in writing that the dealer would be using new parts, not used. But the new parts most likely comes in unpainted but primed; so it really does not matter who does the labor as far as replacing the damaged parts.

I'd be a tad upset (putting it mildly) as well. There is an excellent Mazda dealer near my place. I took my 03 MPV there for everything and will do so for my 5 as well.

Not comparing here but I just washed my 5 and there is a fairly deep 4" scratch on my right sliding door, probably some person carrying their junk between cars while shopping. (braindead

Thanks for the comments guys.

The estimate came back on Friday at $3600 (Labor 2,100, Parts 1,150, Tax the difference); body shop confirmed that all the parts will be OEM...but then again, I didn't think anybody was making aftermarket body panels yet for second generation 5's. One hiccup though (already): They ordered the rear quarter panel patch the same day of the estimate, but the dealer called me this morning to inform me they sent the wrong one. Alas, it won't be done until next Wednesday now...

BTW: Thinking about pursuing diminished value on the claim...going to have to research that a bit more as it's a relatively new thing in my state (WA).

I would also get a written document stating that the parts replaced will be backed by the same rust-through coverage that's under your new car warranty. I have had body work done by the dealer for my Honda Odyssey and it started to rust after a year later, and the dealer only had warranty for the labor for 90 days.

I have an 03 honda Odyssey. I got it 1st week of December that year. Anyways, it had snowed and I was parked in front of my office front doors as I had to open and then run out to do an errand for my office. The phone was ringing as I entered, so I grab it and I'm standing in front of the windows of my office talking and looking out the window at my car. All of a sudden, my car moves back 2 or 3 feet an its own. The car was not running and I was alone. I go out side and a canteen truck had pulled into our office parking lot and backed up into the front of my van. The weight of the truck with the chrome box on the back weighed enough to move my van on the snow a couple of feet.

the van had less than 1000k on it.

the hood, grill, bumper, headlights and a few other parks all needed replacing. I suppose if it had not snowed, there might have been more damage as the car would not have moved as easily.

I still don't understand how this guy can pull into my particular parking lot and not see where I was parked and still back into me. Its like he did not even use his rear view mirrors either.

To top it all off, He wanted to leave and finish his route and come back. He wanted permission for a hit and run. Some people have no brains. The guy does not come around anymore.
