I have posted questions in the past in regards to a buzzing/rattle/cricket sound at a specific rpm while in gear and only at this specific rpm. The problem turned out to be the wastegate actuator which some have mentioned in the past. I brought my car in on Tuesday and just picked it up today. They replaced the turbo and fixed my b.s alarm problem. Im going to find my old post so I can let those with the same problem know to go get it checked out like I promised them. My question for those of you who are experienced with turbos, why did this happen and is there something that can be done to prevent this? I plan on keeping this car mainly because I love it but also because I cant afford to be replacing turbos after the warranty. I guess I should also mention that I had aboslutely no issues with bosst or anything else, it was just an annoying rattle at that rpm. Thanks for all the help guys/girls.

I had THE exact same probelm. Exact same RPM too. I have no idea what causes this and I am not looking forward to replacing the turbo after my warranty has expired.

I thought it was a heatshield vibrating? Is that what it sounds like? I hear it best when I am in the parking garage at work.

I will have to check it out. Were you losing boost? Because I don't seem to be loosing any.

I thought it was the heatshield also. In fact the first two times I took it in for that they tightened the heatshield and the vibration went away but only for like a day. SO the third time I took it in they said that a screw on my wastegate had become stripped and was working its way out, so they had to replace the whole turbo. It took them two days and when I got it back it was smoking and leaking oil like crazy so I had to go back AGAIN. One problem= 4 visits! But they fixed a gasket and the oil leak went away. Car has been running good ever since (it's been about 4 thousand miles ago, it happened at 10,000 miles) except now I have "the CLUNK", YAY Mazdaspeed!!!!!!!

It does sound like a loose heatshield. When it happened to me, there was no loss of boost at all.

When I first heard this rattle I thought it was the heat shield, or the manifold bolt. After checking I was fed up and brought it in. I never had any bosst problems. The car ran and drove just fine. Mazda figured the problem out the day I brought it in and had the turbo replaced within a day of receiving it. No rattle now. I asked before but does anyone know the cause of this?

I would really like to know what causes this as well. I dont really want to have to buy a new turbo when my warranty is up.
