Today's mod....painting front emblem black. Its a boring mod, but I figured I would give some pics if people were interested. Its a bit more aggresive look. I am getting an Autoexe grill, but with shipping, paint, and install...it will be a while before it's in. So for now, I decided to do this cheap mod....could still use the emblem in the future. For a more perminant application, I would reccomend different painting options / better clear coat.

Here goes.

1) Home Depot: Steel Wool (optional), Goop Adhesive, Plastic Primer, and Gloss Black spraypaint. approx $10

2) Remove emblem with utility knife and flat-head screwdriver carefully. It is attached with grey foam adhesive. The adhesive should stick to the emblem and not the grill, if it sticks to the grill just scrape it off. Flip the emblem over, and use the utility knife to scrape the adhesive out of the grooves. Below is the final product.

3) Clean the surface of the emblem well. Use the coarse steel wool and rub the surface in which you intend to paint. This will slightly rough up the surface; nothing that will be noticeable once painted, but this will help the first coat of primer to stick, and not eventually crack off along with the top coat. Use fine steel wool between coats of primer if you wish, but not between coats of paint. Below are pictures of primer and paint. The paint I chose was very glossy and shiny. Light hits it well on the road. Paint the black heavy and keep your eyes for overspray which causes orange-peel effect on already painted portion.

4) Goop adhesive is very viscous....so use some small tool to "press" it into the groove on the back of the emblem. It will stay in there pretty good. Flip the emblem upright and press it into place, cleaning up any Goop that seeps out. Let it sit overnight or as long as you can before driving it. Below is the final product.

More pics of my car will be taken at a nicer location than a parking lot, and after my lowering springs are on. So keep an eye out if you wish to see the rest. If you are looking for a more perminant application, use many coats of clear-coat to keep the rocks and bugs from chipping away paint.

Very Glossy - almost looks like black chrome. Flat paint might even look good on the flat black grill.

Hope you all enjoyed. Soon my front end will look nothing like this. I hate the factory grills.

Disregard the attachments, they are the same as whats in the post. Forgot to pull them from attachments list.

My buddy works at Mazda, he leads up a performance store there for enthusiasts such as us. I think I might get some emblems from him first, then paint them and see how they look before I rip off the other emblems. Or change the emblems. Who knows. The front end is my first concern. Thanks.

Looks good. I painted mine when I painted my headlights. It's flat black, but leaning every so slightly towards gunmental. I personally really dig the flat look as it matches the stock grille nicely.

Yea, the flat looks good. I dont even know if I like mine yet.....but with the Autoexe grill in the works, it won't be an issue. I def. need to get new mesh grills, the stock looks so cheap IMO.

Funny you should say that. I actually had a DGM CF grille, but went back to stock as I liked stock better. Different strokes... :D

I was planning on painting the fiberglass DGM grill titanium (the outer piece), then possibly putting some sort of emblem on the grill insert that comes with it. I also considered a custom grill just to be different. How do you take the stock grill off? I found all the upper screws and clips, but behind the grill (on the bottom) it is attached with what looks to be 3 fasteners. It seems to be attached to the bumper. Is there an easy way of removing this? I am sure this is an age-old question, but never considered removing it until now. I will keep searching the forum...I am sure I will find it. Any links? Thanks in advance. I am a mechanical engineer, so I can figure it out myself.....just pointless if someone already has.

Just unscrew it and pull up and then out. Or Out and then up....one of the 2, there are sorta clip things holding it in.

Chris

I unscrewed it, and when you pull outward two clips up top pop out of the frame. When I pulled up it wasn't budging. How do these clips work? Which directions do I pull? Do I need to press these clips (that I can't see), or do they just come loose with a little tug. I was worried to hurt the grill. Thanks in advance.

The grille is pretty tough. Just pull like a motherfucker and it will come off in your hand. It will feel like you're going to bring the bumper with it, but you wont.

Try this link for any and all info regarding removing and replacing your grille:

I painted my emblem a metallic red last year, but the winter did a number on it and I want to repaint it.

Does anyone know how to remove the emblem to repaint after goop has already been used??? I hope it is possible.

Cool, I might try this in the future, since everything on the front of my car is black minus this and the licenses plate (needs to go!)

Looks good man. I did this to my car before the accident. I used a flat black though and from far away, even in the day time, you could barely tell it was there.

Read the goop label. There might be something on there about taking it off. If not, you could try heating it up with a hair dryer and taking it off with some floss.

Almost a year bump, wow! I am getting a new DGM CF grill soon, so this little mod will be sitting on the wall in my garage!
