MX-6 engine problem!

Computer code 30. It's Not in the manual!

Here's the problem: '93 MX-6, 90k Miles. A couple of weeks ago, the "Check Engine" light started coming on intermittently, and when the light was on, the car would lose part of it's power - say 20 percent. I checked the easy suspects - oil level, filters, did a listen to each injector, new PCV, etc. Nothing apears wrong. It started happening more frequently, so I took it to the dealer I bought it from. They plug it into their diagnostic computer and tell me that it returns a "Code 30". Code 30 is unprecidented in their mechanics experience and is in none of their maintenance documentation, nor does it appear in any reference I can find online. They say that they have tried contacting Ford corprate engineers, but get no response.

The dealer mechanics say that unless I'm willing to just start replacing components, with no guarantee of fixing it, they can't fo anything more and I ought take it and drive it until it comes back with a code indicating a problem they CAN deal with.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jeff

There is no code 30. your 93 is OBD-I. there IS a code 30 in the 96+ mx6's which are OBD-II, but yours would not be throwing such a code.

Since it is intermittent, and the car loses pwoer when the light comes on, i would have to take a few stabs in the dark at either one of the o2 sensors being bad (is this a 4cyl or 6cyl mx6?) When the o2's read out of spec it goes into failsafe ie: limp-home mode and is uber rich and is basically farting gas out of your tailpipe. Run too long like this and you'll need a new catalytic converter too.

another possibility is the crank position sensor - it too will come on intermittently if the voltages being read are not within spec, and it will force the car into the std. +10 degrees timing.

there are a few other things that could have tripped the CEL, and would be intermittent, but my bet is on the o2's.

you can check the codes on pre-96 mx6's yourself by the way. there are two pins you have to jump, to get the CEL light to output a morse-code like pattern. here is the method: (note this is assuming a v6 mx6. the 4 cyl might be *slightly* different.)

Locate and open the "Diagnostic" box under the hood. It's between the battery and the fender

The pins labelled "TEN" (which stands for "Test ENgine" by the way) and GND (ground) are the pins of interest. Make sure the ignition is OFF and use a paperclip to jumper the TEN and GND pins together.
Turn on the ignition (do not start the car) and watch the CEL. After about 4-seconds, it will begin to flash any codes that may be stored. If there are no codes stored, the CEL will not flash (it will go out.)

Malfunction codes are generally 2-digit affairs although Mazda decided to get tricky. They include 2-digit codes that involve '0' (zero) as a digit. Code 02 is one example. Code 10 is another.

The codes are broken into a 10s digit and a 1s digit. The 10s digit is flashed first, followed by the 1s digit.

The digits are distinguished by the length of time they flash the CEL.

10s digits flash the CEL on for 1.2-sec while 1s digits flash the CEL for 0.4-sec. basically a long or a short pulse.

Digits that are '0' (zero) flash the CEL exactly zero times. hence 3 short pulses, then a break would be a code "03"

make sure you connect the GND pin and NOT THE B+ pin which is adjacent.... lol that will pop a few fuses.

post the codes you pull back here and we can see what we find and work from there.

btw mazda mechanics do more harm than good on the mx6, i have found.. the KL/FS motors, pre OBD-II, are just plain unknown to them it seems. (though found in a myriad of mazda vehicles)

Hopefully, the rebuild on GM's old MX-6 will be completed and I'll have that there. It'll have some bling to it.

You know what I like about this board?
