Mufflers and noise

Why is it that aftermarket mufflers must make noise? The only sense I can find in it is that by not reducing noise, it could possibly free up some flow. But I don't know about that. Is it just trendy, and if so could I get some custom piping along with my stock muffler and get ~the same amount of gains. Or is there a quiet, high-flow muffler I could get?

Most people buy loud mufflers to make thier car sound "bad". I personally could care less. While the best performing exhaust is probably SOMEWHAT loud, it's probably not the loudest. The loudest ones are all for show...AKA "ricey".

Walker exhaust makes a muffler that I used on my truck before. They are supposed to have much better flow characteristics than stock, and still keep a factory level of sound. I know that probably don't make a muffler for our cars, but a universal of some sort could probably be made to fit at any muffler shop. Hope this helps.

Bro What kinda question is that. If u don't like the way the exhaust sounds and all u are gonna do is whine and complain get the hell out of the import scene

Any Good quality exhaust should not be loud. Mine is quite as hell and has no cats!

I completely disagree with you. I don't think his question is dumb at all. It's frustrating because a lot of people only equate loudness with power. I want a high-flow exhaust, but I don't want that loud fart-can sound...I find it very obnoxious and rude.

As for getting out of the scene because he complains...hey there are a LOT of dumb things in the "scene" like false badging, 6 foot tall spoilers and enough bling bling lights to power a small city...personally I could do without all that as well.

Very well said BigBlue.
You can screw up virutally any car with excessive "bling-bling".

Last one I promise!!!

Spoolin...
What model is your muffler, and where did you order it from... if you don't mind me asking. I have wondered about the tone from the large mufflers like that one. I figured it would be more raspy at high RPM's, but if it isn't like you say, I might look into this option. Thanks for your help!

With all due respect, your statement is ridiculous.

You are insinuating a person wishing to increase performance by adding an aftermarket exhaust MUST want to increase the noise created by his car, as well.

I was unaware that the added volume of the new exhaust had anything to do with the increase of horsepower and/or efficiency.

Finally, I must say that I feel that I, personally (I am not attempting to speak for herarety), am NOT "in" the "import scene". I enjoy driving a responsive, agile automobile. I am enamored with my car and appreciate the chance to share this experience and learn from others who drive similar vehicles.

Some of the people here agree with you, 1FastMP3, but many do not. If you feel the need to run a loud car for any reason, more power to you. I prefer not to.

Well I have no cats and 3 inch piping....but I am turbo so that makes things quiter. If you want the same look get a 2.5ich HKS universal muffler (I have the 3 iinch version, but they look exactly the same) Go to a muffler shop and ask them to resonate the piping for you at 2.5 ich and u will have a very quite exhaust. HKS is not ricer raspy at all. Very quite, deep and actually quiter than stock if you have cats. I would say mine is just as loud as the stock db wise but very deep......kinda sounds like a supra:)

Very well said, Syzygy.

Did you ever hear it with no cats and no turbo(I don't see one in my near future, but I also don't see cats in the future :D)? Because the way you described your is about the way I'd like mine to sound: not high-pitched or raspy.

you got it pretty much...stock/factory cars are stuffed with sound deadening materials to keep the noise level down (technically it's the law, cars aren't supposed to be louder then a set level) anyways...but by adding all this sound deadening material the flow is pretty much cut down...in order to have everything flowing better (exhaust) you'll have to end up removing all that crap...

Aw man my bad everybody I read that wrong sorry guy. Opened my big mouth too soon. Had a arrgument with my girl and it had me all ticked off when i wrote that but we won't get into that. I agree with u myself I don't like the extremely loud exhaust neither I have to hear that God awful sound every sat night from a couple guys. Didn't mean to rag on u like that guy. I thought u mean any kind of import exhaust tone. Can I recommend an exhaust for u. If I can I highly recommened the Thermal it has a real nice deep smooth exhaust note not ricey at all doesn't even come close before u go and buy an exhaust see if u can hook up with somebody that runs a Thermal and I'm almost positive u will buy it.....once again sorry bout that sarcastic replie bro

I wholeheartedly agree.

When I took pics of my "absurd" exhaust they were close ups to show the quality. If you see the rear far away shot the exhaust looks hardly to big. If u check out the new issue of turbo magazine they have a write up on the hks exhaust catback system for the p5. Like I said before this thing is very quite and high quality. I hate RICE and this is far from it not to big at all. I will try to post some better pics to better illustrate my point.
