msp3 vs msp 6

Just an observation but I notice a bunch of 12 sec and low 13 speed 6 1/4 runs. I am yet to see anything below 13.6 on the speed 3. The speed 3 has faster 0-60 times (stock) than the speed 6 and it pulls harder from rolls. Why!!

It also depends if you're comparing quoted factory 0 - 60 numbers with actual slips from the track. I'm not sure what Speed3's are running on the dragstrip, but it isn't uncommon for a stock Speed6 to post in the 13's. R&T seem to have clocked a 6 at 14.8, but temperature, humidity, track conditions, driver, and the specific car could all lead to variations.

If you go off of car magazines (Car & Driver, motortrend), the MS3 and the MS6 have the same 0-60 time. The MS6 has the benefits of a quicker 60 foot due to AWD, whereas the MS3 has to deal with wheel spin and lowered boost in gears 1 and 2. But, the Speed 3 also weighs about 400 pounds less, and has less drivetrain losses. You should look at the actual power to weight ratio. This is a good number to judge performance of cars ...

For example: Stock MS6 puts out about 270 HP at the crank. Most stock MS6's put down around 220 HP to all wheels, so about a 20% powertrain loss. Lets say the car weighs 3700 lbs .. Take 3700 divide by the actual power (220) and you get a power-to-weight ratio of 16.8 lbs/hp. This means every horsepower the car makes has to move 16.8 pounds of mass.

For the MS3 - Figure 263 HP stock, with about a 15% driveline losses (I do not know what a stock MS3 dyno's, but according to CP-e's graphs it is around 227). The MS3 weighs in about 3200 lbs. Take 3200 lbs / 227 hp and you get 14.1 lbs/hp.

This explains why from a roll the MS3 will beat a MS6, and why the MS3 traps a higher speed in the quarter mile than a MS6. Even though the time is the same.

Hmmm. Ive only been to the track once and Ive never seen a speed 3 run. I ran a 13.9 with my stock speed 6. Ive just seen a ton of videos of speed 6 and 3 runs. The speed 6 runs are consistantly faster. I think ive seen like 1 out of the 10 3's ive seen run better than a 14 sec run. Maybe there just arent enough videos of 3's on the web.

This is because the MS6 is a more forgiving car...to get better than 14 sec with an MS3 requires a perfect launch. It's possible to do, but much more difficult than getting the same time with an MS6

AWD makes a HUGE difference off the line. It's that simple...If the MS3 had some sort of launch control like the new Cobalt SS then the car might get out of the hole quicker.

If the MS3 2nd gear was able to hit 60mph, more traction in 1st and 2nd and along with the launch control, it would help a little more.

To be honest with you, i was thinking about trading my Mazda 6i in for a speed3. As it sits right now I also own a 06 MS6 GT with MS CAI, PG Test pipe with the reflash done. When i put on the MS CAI it felt slower for some reason. So i decided to reflash the car and it still seemed slow!!

Might be all in my head or I'm probably just delusional........haha Well back to my story, I never drove a speed 3 "so this was my first time test driving a speed3". I test drove a Red (SPORT) 08 Speed3 with only 32miles on it. Was on the showroom floor for the longest time considering the miles on it........I was surprised. Anyways i took her out for a spin and 1st and 2nd gears felt so weak compared to my Speed6. So i went on the highway and did a few 2nd, 3rd, 4th gear pulls...............No bulls*** my Speed6 would walk this Speed3!! It felt so slow i don't even know why but it did!!

Maybe the car wasn't broken in since it only has 32miles on it....I have no idea, but i felt dissapointed!! I mean it was way quicker than my regular 6i but in no way it felt like it would pull on my MS6!!

Let me put it this way from a 2nd gear roll at 30-80 My MS6 pulled on my buddies 04 Type S. His Type S runs 13.8@101mph, and I'm pretty sure it would have pulled on this Speed3 for some reason!!

His mod's are: Intake, Race-header, Exhaust, Hondata IMG, ESMM, Hondata #4 Reflash

I'm not saying Speed3's are slow but the one i test drove was(headshake

i test drove the speed3 before getting the speed6 and was impressed. however, after having had fwd cars for the past 6 years i decided to look @ awd or rwd vehicles. test drove some subbies(not enough room), charger(meh) and then the 6. the 6 impressed me enough i completely forgot about the 3. now, i am biasssssed due to the fact i was sick of only being able to get oversteer from pulling the brake or icey roads. but, to reiterate what's being said - AWD helps off the line and it truly depends on the driver.

in any case i'd like to see more vids of ms6's and ms3's going at it.

When I purchased my MS6, I had the option of a MS3 GT for about the same price. After driving both several times and comparing options and overall design, I went with the MS6 for several reasons. The AWD is very nice for MI winter weather, the standard features in the MS6 Sport vs. having to get the GT trim in the MS3 (HIDs, Bose, etc.) and the overall look. My Protege was pretty good at getting attention, and this time I wanted something a little more subtle. Side by side the MS6 is just that.

In terms of performance, the AWD is more parasitic to power than FWD, and we're carrying a little more rump than the MS3 as well. Also, the transmission gearing isn't the same.
