MSP Radio

:
2002 Red Protege 5
So guys/gals, tell me how sweet the factory radio is? 450 watts is pretty good on an inexpensive car. I think my pro5 had about 10 watts out of the factory LOL.

Oh yeah, and I saw Car and Driver on TNN this morning, and the test driver was bashing the msp left and right. He said he hated the interior seats, the orange paint, and the ride of the vehicle. What a pr*ck.

I dunno what car is better for 20,500. Guess he's too used to driving those dumb a** lexus

I thought for a factory car, the MSP I test drove had a really nice stereo. I still think the little flip open compartment underneath is cheap and the Kenwood's buttons too small, but it sounds very nice, and the speaker install and amp install are very clean.

About the TNN comments; I have to say that the seats are just a little on the cheesy side for me. All that multi color cloth, mesh stitching combination its got going on is just plain weird. The ride is a tad bumpy, but such is the tradeoff for the suspension you get.

Come on now, TNN? Please - most of those rednecks on "horsepower TV" and "C&D" make the kids at the vocational tech school in town look like Porsche engineers. The only redeeming thing TNN has going for it is Star Trek Next Generation reruns. :)

I think (know?) there is no other car for the money that touches the MSP - at least not for what I was wanting; a daily driver, with great usable power, fantastic handling package, a kick-ass sound system, and Mazda quality.

I'm 48 with a passion for sports/touring cars. I wanted a replacement for my '99 Nissan Sentra SE Limited, and after driving the Spec V Type R a couple of times, I did get past that insane interior (most unique), and yes; I might miss not having a sunroof and the cruise control, but the MSP is more refined, especially in the suspension department. I love Nissans, and I could have purchased a Spec V Type R for about $17,000 (big price reduction), but the MSP was calling my name.

My wife has a 2002 Protege ES, so it's a great combo.

It's all personal opinion, of course. I've also about got the Kenwood Sound System figured out!! Ha!

K&N, doesn't yet offer their air filter for the MSP from what Auto Zone told me, but I'm wanting one of those when (if) they become available. Other mods? I know I don't want to go too crazy. Sure, if I could find 200 hp without alot of trouble, that might happen, but I am not changing turbos, or anything like that.

I work with some guys that are simply HP crazy. Hell! I might not ever get a car with 200+ HP. I really thought on this next purchase that might happen, since I was considering the WRX a while back. Nice car, but I didn't want to spend $25,000+ (like my buddy at work did). But; he will never be happy. I know him better than he knows himself. He wasn't happy with hi '93 (390HP) RX-7. God! That was fast (single Apex turbo), Or his '99 Supercharged Civic (nearly 300hp).

In my area (outside of Memphis), more people are hung up with 1/4 mile than anything else. I could care less - I'm more concerned with 'turn 1'! The MSP is plenty quick for now, and maybe the future. We will see. I love the 'complete' MAZDASPEED package. That's what this car is about.

I want to put gas in it, change the oil, wash & wax it, and enjoy it. I don't want to wrench on it. I have a radio control 1:10 Team Associated Touring Car for that (There's a money pit!!!).

Cheers!

Aye, well said, except for the "Type R."

It's a Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V. :)

Yes,,, Indeed, and I know that; that is not the first time I have mis-worded that!! Ha!.....

I guess I need to type that 100 times to remember....

SE-R = Nissan
Type R = Acura (Honda)

SE-R = Nissan
Type R = Acura (Honda)

SE-R = Nissan
Type R = Acura (Honda)

SE-R = Nissan
Type R = Acura (Honda)

etc...

Cheers!!

These guys seem to appreciate the Mazdaspeed Protege. They might not buy one themselves, but they understand what its all about. And they work for Car and Driver. :)

Since the Mazdaspeed Proteg is available in black, I won't harp on the shocking peach color that had kids smiling and grown-ups asking, "Is it supposed to look like that?" Like what? "A radioactive Popsicle." Color aside, Mazda got this one right. It's a bit stiff for Michigan roads, and under full power there's an unhealthy tug on the steering wheel. But if you want genteel manners, get the decaf version. This one's meant for the few who want the most performance and tightest handling 20 grand can buy. Mazda rightly figured there aren't many of them. In a perfect world, I'd want the turbo motor in the MP3, but I can appreciate what we have. Larry Webster

It shouldn't surprise anyone that this Mazdaspeed Proteg has a harder-edged feel than most of its competitors. Developed by Mazda North American Operations in collaboration with some top-drawer aftermarket specialists, it's never had its sharp edges rounded off by headquarters engineers insisting on refinement. That's why its steering is unusually sharp and responsive, its suspension transmits everything happening at the pavement surface, its engine pushes the limits of torque steer, and it's painted a color I can only describe as "neon nectarine." In the hot-compact class, this Proteg charts its own course, and it's the better for it. Csaba Csere

Your post above is spooky. Not only are we of the exact same mindset regarding vehicles, but I have a Team Associated RC10 car at home (not the touring car, but a buggy). It sits next to my HPI RS4 Rally Subaru WRX. :)
