I'm looking at a mazdaspeed protege that's really cheap. It's got a good body and interior but the turbo leaks oil and it doesn't run very good under power or at higher RPM. The guy dosent seem to know much about cars so it's hard to ask him questions. What could the problems be and what should I look for when I go check it out?

It has 126,000 miles.
Some kind of FMIC and better than plastic piping.
The rest is stock from what I'm told.

Remove the hot pipe off the turbo and see if there is oil in it, if it's dry the turbo may be alright. These cars don't run too well on the stock tune but if the turbo is bad it certainly won't feel very powerful.

126k and sputtering already? Walk away.

Sputtering and turbo leaking oil could mean two things. Turbo is bad (which could mean upgrade to a gt28) or from what youre describing sounds like low compression/bad or worn oil rings. That car was probably beat to hell if its already having two of those issues. A msp woth a bad turbo doesnt run as bad as some people would think.
