MSP CAI/Exhaust ?...New Member

Hey guys, I'm new on here and their is a lot of good info on the forum, but I'm having trouble finding definitive answers to some fairly simple questions.

I recently purchased a Speed3 and I'm seriously interested in the Mazdaspeed CAI and Mazdaspeed Cat-Back, because it will not void the warranty and I can simply finance them both under my monthly payment. This is my first "new" car and will be the first car I have done "modifications' to.

My questions:

Do these simple bolt-on mods require engine management (such as the CP-E Standback or upcoming Cobb AccessPort) to run properly and preserve the reliability and longevity of the engine, or will a ECU reset/reflash after the installation of those two parts be sufficient? If a reset/reflash is sufficient, does that have to be done at the dealership or can I do it myself somehow?

Also, does anyone have a dyno chart or any credible HP/TQ gains with the Mazdaspeed exhaust? I've seen a good bit of info on the intake, but none on the exhaust.

Anyway, I've searched a good bit for these answers, but just can't seem to stumble across these answers. I apologize ahead of time for the noob question, but you guys have a great forum set up here that has been very informative.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums! The intake does not require engine management. I don't know how much hp the exhaust or intake yields, but it probably won't be anything significant. Wild guess around 10-20whp. Just to let you know MSP = Mazdaspeed Protege. MS3 is what you're referring to

do not do that, you will pay 3 times more then saving slowly and buying them used or outright...33 bucks for a k&N and you get almost all the power as a CAI...you have a damn good stock exhaust just take the cats out and you will save your self a shot load of money

You're right about not financing. After some more extensive searching I've stumbled across a place that has the Mazdaspeed3 CAI for $320 new in box. But $inCity, you say I can get the nearly same performance with simply adding a K&N Filter. At the risk of sounding like a ricer, I'd also like to hear my turbo and BOV a little more, so I think I still will go for the intake anyway. Also, I've seen a few dyno charts showing gains of nearly 25hp and 25tq. It just doesn't seem like you could get that with an air filter alone, but maybe I'm wrong...

And, I assume with taking the cats out, that it will not pass inspection. I don't mind putting that cats back on, but it seems like that would void the warranty. Also, would getting an exhaust or removing the cats require some sort of engine management? Or can the computer figure it out?

Thanks!

The intake is definitely a nice supporting mod for your future upgrades. The K&N is the economical upgrade. If you don't see yourself getting any other mods soon, I'd just go with the K&N

I have an 08' MS3 and I went with the MS CAI from day one. I haven't ever modded any of my cars either but for some reason, this car makes you yearn for power even though it's got the balls. (nuts)

I saw a couple weeks back a thread with dyno runs with just a MS CAI, just stock and the CAI with the cat back exhaust (both from MS) and you're right, the CAI gives about 25 hp at the wheels and the exhaust seems to only provide an increase of about 5hp.

Even though that's the case, I still want the exhaust. I love the exhaust sound that's on there now but a little more power is always welcome and I think it just might even sound that much better with a more ripping exhaust note.

On top of that, I am also thinking of getting the MS Coil Overs...just wish I had more reviews from other users regarding the handling/comfort trade off.

Oh, and yeah, the sounds with the CAI are seriously cool and I haven't regretted it even once (cool)
