MS3 vs. stage 1 08 STI + Pics

Getting a little off topic here but does a stage 2 setup raise the drop-off point at all? I know the K04 is small but I would think good tuning along with the proper supporting mods would yield some more RPMs out of the power band. I would think helping out the flow with SRI, turbo inlet, FMIC and a TBE with some smart tuning, not just raising boost would yield some higher RPM power. Are the stock headers (exhaust manifold) equal length?

Even my old WRX's with the TD04 couldnt really push more than ~17-18psi before become flame throwers but they would at least make power at 7k rpms. IIRC they were rated somewhere around 360cfm which is a small turbo. I dont know the specs on the K04. Borg warner? K04XXXX?

you must have had a 2L...when i was running the td04 it was way past dead at 7K. I think the K04 is about TD04 sized from what I've been able to find out.

Yep, both were 2.0l (02&05). I think your right, its all relative to the displacement of the motor. My WRX pulled all the way to 7k but only made 212whp where my 04 FXT with basically the same supporting mods, stock TD04 with the 2.5l made 225whp and dropped off at 6k rpms.

Does anyone know the specs on our K04? flow charts, etc.
 
Now let's get to the bottom line:
Price for a 2008 STI = $35,000
Price for a 2008 MS3 = $24,000
 
I don't think Mazda set up these engines from the factory where the turbos are at their max rpm. So spinning them a few hundred rpms higher shouldn't be an issue.

Curoius to know also what the max is tho.
 
great story. I will have to get some videos of my sti vs my brother in laws speed3. we have done a bunch of races but nothin on film yet. The 06 is a little faster than the new ones though
 
Comparing a stock STI to a modded MS3 isn't fair. The stock tune on the Subaru's is a joke for spool up. TBE+tune which is entirely reliable setup yields peak torque @~3,100-3,200 around 320-360wtq depending on the tuner & dyno.

My 06' WRX with a STI turbo made peak torque at 3,150 and full boost by 3,000@19psi. I've driven a stock STI as well, the "oomphh" is un-impressive without a little tuning. Hell my clipped 20g on the same motor made peak torque by 3,500.

its fair. their is a great video on youtube of a stock sti vs a spd3 with cai vs a 350z with full exhaust. sti wins out but the sped3 is right their and the z gets absolutely blown away by both.
 
Update, My buddy with the STI is about the put on a Cobb downpipe and run the Stage 2 map. We'll run them again and see the difference.

He should definitely pull fairly well on me then.
 
350Z VQHR would actually be a nice run with both rides. Slightly modded that thing passes 300hp easy.

It's pretty unsettling how similar these two cars look. (boom07) I didn't catch this thread the first time around so thanks for the revival.
 
I like the ms3, but it would be soo much hotter with the wide fronts like the STI. A lowered STI with the right wheels looks down right mean. I dont believe ive seen a really hard ms3 yet
 
I agree, although they do look meaner than usual when dropped pretty low and crazy offset wheels.
