MS3 Sedan

it wouldnt look right as a sedan man... a 3 Series sedan is just to small. Thats why the created the MS6 which really didnt sell well at all.

it's too small? i don't quite get what you're saying by that. i think it would be better then the hatch but that just my .02

the ms3 is far sportier then the ms6 as far as it's styling. if they made the ms3 in the sedan i'm sure it would outsell the ms3 hatch and the ms6.

No. I like the hatchback body style much more than sedan. I am glad the sti went to a hatchback and I think the evo should switch too. I think spoilers on sedans are gay but I like spoilers on hatches.

i read recently about the new STi and why they went with a hatchback, and one of their rally drivers said the hatch style was more stable, or something to that nature. as a dealership employee, i have heard requests for the sedan speed3 with an automatic on numerous occasions. i do wonder how a dual clutch auto would work in our car, but i guess that deserves another thread.

Right, I believe that there are aerodynamic advantages to the hatchback body style. Don't ask me how it works though.

I'm not going to lie to you I wanted the Speed3 to be a sedan ALL along and was VERY dissapointed when it came out only in the hatchback. I actually refused to buy one because of it..... That is until it was time for me to trade in my '04 3Sedan and I test drove the Speed just to see how it was.. Holy feck did I ever fall in love with it!! Now I see why they chose the hatch and what a GREAT choice it was. I can't look at the 3 sedans the same way I once did when I loved them so much after owning this baby.

At the risk of sounding blasphemous I would have chosen sedan over hatch if given a choice...

I remember when the MSP came out, all us P5 owners wanted a Hatch version. A sedan and hatch version would have been perfect, 2500 of each.

I want a sedan.

Objective Facts

Advantages for sedan:
gas better aero .32 vs .33
has better structural rigidity
is lighter
has lower center of gravity
is cheaper
has less road noise

Disadvantages for sedan:
Cargo capacity
Worse weight distribution front to rear
More polar enertia (sedan is longer than hatch)
insurance?

I think the structural rigidity actually goes to the hatch and i dont know why there would be less road noise in the sedan. Also the price difference, aerodynamics, and weight are so similar that it is hardly an advantage. If you want to go with more practical it is hatchback all the way, only real argument for sedan is the looks.

If anything, I wish the Speed3 was more station wagony. I have a sedan. It's cool but the rear window/trunk thing makes loading bigger stuff a suck-fest.

looks are subjective

-Price is $500 less between "s" sedan and hatch
-Imagine a brace between the rear wheels in the hatch, like the 350z, sedans got it.
-Less road noise cause the trunk mutes alot of the rear tire noise. Says Consumer Reports.
-Aero for reg sedan is .32. aero for reg hatch is .335, aero for the speed hatch is .325. Guessing aero for speed sedan is .315, minimal but at high speeds, very influential.
-Weight is about 40 lbs. less, seen a cf hood save someone 8 lbs? 40 is a lot and all is held very high on the hatch, makes a difference in center of gravity.

How do you figure? You believe the M3 Sedan is a large car? The hatch was the logical solution to the MS6 sales slumping. If people were at all interested in a sedan, they wouldnt have had to slash the prices like they did to sell off those MS6's. the reason the MS3 is sportier is because its a hatch. You cant make a sedan that stylish without ricing it out to death and in the end, a MS3 Sedan would look like ass.

Its not like the sedan has a "brace" there and the hatch has no connection, the difference is that it's "brace" is right under the spoiler, so further back and higher up, and i really think that all of those other points are so minimal that any reasonable person would debate it for the looks only. And you only mentioned the price difference between the sedan s sport and hatch s sport. The s touring and s grand touring have the exact same prices. I imagine the difference for the s sports is only because of a different feature.

There is a brace under the rear window of the sedan behind the seats and its a substantial brace for the rear of the car. The hatch has a lot more reason to flex, mostly cause it has a big hole in the back where the hatch sits. Haltech or Enganear, any other engineer jump in here. Sedan has better torsional rigidity, period. Why are you saying the sport ms3 will have the same price when only touring models are equal? The s sedan and s hatch has a $490 price difference. All other advantages the sedan has are minimal, maybe in a typical car, but they are all very relevant to a high-performance car like the Speed3.

I have often wonder about a MS3 sedan. I like the idea of one. But only in a perfect world would you have both.
