MS3 oil?

Just changed out my break in oil at about 2800 since I wanted to put 3k on it for before I switched to Mobil 1.

The dealer did it and it took a little less then the 6qts that I brought with me they said. I checked it at the dealer and it seamed dead on with the Max fill line but when I got home it is now just above it. I was told by a friends dad that a 1/4 qt extra wont hurt anything and no worries but I thought I would ask around here.

On the dip stick the oil reads above the 2nd eyelet where it says "MAX" and is even with the the letter "A". That amounts to about 1/4 inch above the eyelet.

What do you guys think?

I am guessing some of the old oil was still up in the engine from having drove the car from the parking space to the actual stall where they change it. This would then be the reason not 100% oil was out of the engine and it took just under 6qts to fill it.

YOu could just take the drain plug out of the oil filter housing thing.THat should let out just enough to put you at the right level.Im not sure if you have enough in there to hurt anything.

Well from what I have been told there isnt an issue from being a tad over but I would still like to know what you guys think.

I also called Pepboys and they said its fine since after about a week of driving it will most likely settle to where its perfect and not to worry.

The other thing I can do is go to pepboys and get a small snake with a pump on it and pull some oil out through the dip stick tube. Guess I dont need to but I suppose I answered my own question, lol.

As for switching to mobil one, Hmmm why? synthetic and regular motor oil still coaks the same. (coaking is what happens to oil when its running over the center section of a turbo. its not good for it and it breaks down oil FAST regardless of it being Synthetic or normal oil, for those that don't know).

Call me crazy but i get my oil changes at the dealer for 20.00 qand just have them put regular oil in it. If it needed synthetic the manufacturer would have ran the engine with synthetic. If your a person to run oil for 5-7k miles then go ahead with synthetic, but if its every 3k then same the cash and run good regular OIL.

My 2 cents.

Oh i do run Mobil 1 in the SVO but hell it only gets an oil change twice a year.

I plan to run the oil for 5k but after seeing what it looked like at 3k its apparent that a turboed car makes the oil dirty faster. Either way I will cont to run Mobil 1 and for $30 at 6qts and $13 for the change and filter its not that expensive to make me use non synthetic.

For these cars running hot and being big on power its a good idea to run synthetic and other then that there are sites that can be read to understand the benefits of synthetic vs conventional. I have mechanics that are friends and I let them tell me all the big talk on why its better to use and forget why but none the less I listen to them when they say to use it.

For 90,000 miles you will have done 30 oil changes at 3k intervals. At 43.00 a hit you'll spend 1300.00 (approx)

for 90,000 you will have done 36 oil changes at 2500 intervals. at 20.00 (my dealers going rate) i will spend 720.00

You are talking about spending an extra 600.00 for what? Turbo cars still destroy oil and its natural properties. the sheer heat of the turbo is enough to break down any oil no matter what it is.

Either way you enjoy your car and i'll enjoy mine.

I hear you man and those are good poins but synthetic wont break down under the same heat conventional would. I am no mechanic and I cant pin point specefics here but running synthetic on high performance cars comes highly recommended by the mechanics I know.

Maybe the other Mobil 1 lovers can chime in here and throw out a few more points.

I just read that Mobil 1 protects up to 400deg so now we need to know how hot the engine gets and what temps conventional oils protect up to.

I agree with u on this part. To me oil is oil. If I chose synthetic oil it would be Royal Purple. They claim to have gained 9-10 dyno proven hp by just changing the fluids.

I guess you oughta visit DFWMAZDAS.com and see the thread about 2 different engines (same motor size) with near identical mileage. One with standard oil and the other with royal purple. there was something in the royal P engine that wasn't present in the other engine. from the pics it looks like slight sludge build up. it also had a different color throughout the engine. on the metal. the heads were pulled for various reason, but i have to wonder about royal purple. Either way the key to long engine life is Regular maintenance PERIOD. hell how many cars were on the road and ran fine before they came out with Full synthetic oil?

For the record, i believe that if a car needed synthetic then by all means manufacturers would run syn in the motors from day one. I run mobil one in my SVO, but hell i don't drive enough miles to change the SVO oil but twice a year. So i figure if i'm going to use a good oil then i might as well use mobil one.

I agree with justa4banger. Conventional oil in a turbo'd car does as well as synthetic. I've been toying with turbo'd cars since the early 80's and the synthetic bug has never proven itself worth the extra dollars for me. I change my oil every 3000 miles like clock work and never in my many years have I ever had any problems. One time when I was rebuilding one of my SCCA engines, my buddy could not believe how clean the engine was when we tore it apart. It showed very little wear and the only reason I rebuilt it was to increase the displacement for an open modified class. It had over 100,000 miles on it and I only used Castrol regular oil in it, it's entire life. Today I use Castrol or Quaker State in all my vehicles.

Well since I dont see it as being all that expensive I dont mind putting it in and knowing at the very least it may be over kill. Either way my engine is running some very good stuff and that makes me happy.

Also knowing that I can go 5k or just change the oil when its dirty is great since it wont break down or stop protecting the engine. However yes I do agree that if you go every 3k no oil should break down in that amount of time but I figure why not run the best stuff available locally. I know amsoil is the best but I dont want to hassle trying to order it when Mobil 1 is great and is right at walmart for cheap.

ya but there are differences in how smooth the oil lets your engine move. i like amsoil.heard quaker has some real good stuff.

You've never purchased a single aftermarket part, never replaced a factory stereo, never removed a restrictive stock intake in favor of an aftermarket? Never tinted your windows? I mean, if a car needed any of that stuff, then surely it would have come that way from the factory, right?

I just did my oil change at 2600 miles. WOW that stuff was black. I thinki Im going to start changing my oil every 2000 miles. Haven bought oil from any place in years. Was so overwhelmed by the selection. I ended up using good ole Quaker State 5w-30

See that is what I was just going to post about. Mine was black too at just under 3k miles.

Is this typical on a turbo car?

I thought maybe I had dirt let in by the CAI but I took the tube out and checked with a finger swipe and it was spotless so that isnt it. I suppose the turbo really beats up the oil so I am glad I put Mobil 1 in there.

I may very well have to do 3k changes instead of 5k I planned on doing since I run synthetic oil now.

I use synthetic and I notice that at 5k miles intervals the oil is not as dark, like the conventional oil at 3k miles. It's not rally that expensive if you know were to buy.

Shoot at just 300 miles on my new Mobil 1 I can see it start to get colored but I think that is from mixing with the old stuff that was trapped up in the engine. I know this must be the case since I checked at the dealer the oil level and it was perfect but after I got home it was slightly over full above the 2nd eyelet. This could only have been from the old oil now reading on the stick and combined with the new oil.

I bet after one more change it should pretty much have all the stock oil out of the motor and only synthetic left over.

I will just cont to watch it but do plan on going 5k on synthetic and even that is pretty early to change synthetic oil.

Um no and your a dumbass for trying to attempt this as a comparison.
There's things i need and want....compared to what the car TRUELY needs.
If i want power and added performance then yes i'll add a CAI or ??? if i want a better stereo then yes i'll add one to suit my needs.

Synthetic oil is one of those marketing things........... you don't need it and the car won't last any longer with it/without it........... 95 % of you drivers will sell this car within 3-5 years anyways. Its common knnowledge that americans can't keep cars longer than 3-5 years. If you are a person that can, Great, do what you think you'll need for the life of your car. Its yours.

To say though that synthetic Should be run in the car just because its better..... well who says its better........? who says that for your particular driving, its is a better oil.

All i'm saying is you should change oil sooner in a turbo car...... so if your going to change it sooner ANYWAYS, why waste the cash on synthetic. But hey if think you can afford it and you need it then by all means get it, don't let me stop you. Also anyone is fool to think that in a turbo app you can just run a little longer with synthetic oil between changes. OIL or synthetic will still COAK, and this coaking process from getting super hot( to the point of burning) will destroy ALL oil. Sythetic may resisit a little longer, but not much longer.

you do realize most N/A cars run exhaust temps around 650-850*on the average and 1150-1350 @ WOT, where a average turbo car runs 900-1000* at idle and will easily spike 1600-1700* with a sustained temp of 1300-1450 with a decent tune. Thats hot, and that heat transfers to the turbo ,to the oil, and cooks the oil. in a N/A app the oil never comes that close to such a sustained source of heat like in a turbo car.

Do what you want its your ride, just trying to dismiss any false ideas.
