MS3 30k mile service ....GAAAHHh!!

Wow, the Inspection II(major) service on my wife's X3 was only $424-at the dealer-and that included a brake fluid flush as well as the repair of a curbed wheel.

My schedule II on my 325 was $420. No wheel repair though.

30k service on the MkV GTI is $450 for the DSG alone. Nevermind all that other stuff.

When I was considering a GTI I decided to see if any of the Louisville area VW dealers had a competent service department. I called each one and asked how much a DSG service would cost. Of the five VW dealers I called, only one knew that it needed to be serviced at all. The other four dealers explained-with varying degrees of idiocy-why it wasn't needed...

Actually, I guess I'm in the minority. Been babying the Speed3 ever since I got it. I've only put 1600 miles on it since mid-August and it's been basically a "to work and home" car. I was hoping 30K interval would be OK for my driving habits. Is it 5w-30 dino oil?

Sounds like the way I use mine. I didn't even lean on it much 'til 2K. 30K interval for what, though? Most of us changed the oil at 1K, 3K. Mine just rolled up 6K, so it's off to the quick-change place this weekend with my own filter and their six quarts of 5W-30 dead lizards. I'm switching to synthetic at 9K.

30K for the tranny oil since I drive granny style. And I meant 75W-90 for the tranny oil. I forgot the type I used for my Subie.

No as bad as my buddies 25K mile checkup for his M3. $1600 to flush coolant, brakes, steering. plus adjust the valves. talk about Big Money Waster (BMW)

What about the BMW free service for 4 or 5 years? My buddy's 335 gets free service, but the interval is like 7500mi. Out of interval oil change is more than a $100. Holy crap.

Your buddy must like to drop his pants and grab his ankles at the dealer; the oil and filter cost @$50 retail. Of course he could always-horror of horrors!-risk getting his hands dirty and change the oil himself. With the top-mounted filter it takes all of 20 minutes...

the skid plate even has a hole for the drain plug. You don't have to remove it.

Oil change on BMW = 10 minutes
Oil change on Mazda = 30 minutes.

Not with the spin-on conversion and the quick oil drain valve. ;)

bastard.

I wish there was a thread that had all the serivce intervals listed.

I only got 12K... but I hate spending money at the dealership period. I buy oil and filter and let them do the change so if something breaks durring warentee, I can blame them. But s***... $300+ to look the car over, and change the tranny fluid? I could buy a jack and 2 stands along w/ all the fluids and do it myself for less (I don't owe a jack... shoot me. :dodgy: )

I never take my car to a dealer for routine maintenance unless it's included. My local MINI dealer charges $233 for an off-interval oil change. What do they do for that? Change oil & filter, and cabin air filter. Then "inspect" a few things that rarely need inspecting. Total time in the service bay is under 1 hour. No way they can justify $233.

I'm sure I will ask my Mazda sealer what they'll charge for an MS3 oil change & what brand of synthetic oil they carry. But odds are, I'll be changing my oil in the driveway.

In the meantime, when I hit service/maintenance mileage milestones such as 30k, I will probably end up taking it to an independent mechanic for anything I can't or don't feel like doing myself.

the point is, if you buy a BMW they know your money tree is producing so they feel free to F U in the A even after you drop a boat load of cash for the car. Nice cars no doubt, i would take a Dinan 135i anyday.....:)

Not all dealers share that attitude. My local BMW dealer only charged $110 to change the ATF and final drive oil on my wife's E39 528i. At that price it's just not worth doing it myself.

30,000 Miles

* If necessary, inspect, repair, clean, adjust or replace Cooling system , Fuel lines and hoses *2 , Brake lines, hoses and connections , Disc brakes , Steering operation and linkages , Front and rear suspension, ball joints and wheel bearing axial play , Driveshaft dust boots
* Lubricate All locks and hinges
* Replace Engine oil , Engine oil filter
* Tighten Bolts and nuts on chassis and body

I have never been a fan of dealer performed services.. Either cross out s*** thats not needed, (i.e. all of it). If my bolts in my chassis and body need to be tightened.. I will have to say that's pretty bad.. but they dont so its just a scam.

600 dollars for a lookover and lubricate the locks is just crazy. I bet if they actually found something that needed to be replaced it would be on top of the 600 bucks.
Just do all that s*** either at a decent mechanic or do it yourself and keep receipts/logs of it.

My experiences with dealers usually involve me finding new scratches, dents, dings, and oil and gas in the oddest of places.

Which Dealer?

GAAAAAHHH!!!! GAAAHHH!!! (blarf)(upbum)

The words I said when they told me the 30,000 mile service would be over $600. Well that pretty much put a damper on the old bday today. :(

GAAAAAHHHh!!!!!!

Did Sentry do this? Or was it another?

They typically tell me what they're going ot do and cost. I was able to put off the transmission flush on my wifes Mz5 at teh 30,000 mile service becasue they sadi it would add xx amount to the bill. I did it at 35,000.

I think it all depends on the dealer and the relationship you have with them. I thnk it also depends on teh service person who helps you.

sentry did not do this work. I'm used to Sentry maybe why I was caught off guard with this. I was able to call back the dealer after digging into it more and did post pone some of the work.

Yeah I figured...

Thanks for the clarification. I'm a big fan of Sentry and would have been surprised (and dissapointed) if they messed with you like that. Let me guess you're in Boston and the closest Mazda Dealer probably starts with a "Q".

no. I like Sentry. They've been very accommodating. Just too far and i was there three times in one month for various things recently. I just couldn't keep taking the time. The dealer did good work. Now I know the questions to ask them in particular. They were unclear on the work they were doing OR I was completely oblivious to what they were saying and was not privy to their styles and did not ask the appropriate questions because I never had to in the past with Sentry who I'm familiar with dealing with.
