MPT (Miles Per Tank)

MA to GA is mostly downhill... if you play it right.

Goin down south = downhill.

That's my logic and I'm stickin to it.

Yeah, I was definitley coasting in-gear on shorter downhills, and just rolling in neutral on longer stretches. Also, it was early morning (started driving at 4 am), so I hardly used A/C at all, and was going the speed limit most of the time.

I dont see how you guys can get so much per tank. I always end up filling up around 270-290 and have always gotten around 24-27mpg. SO far i even get the same gas mileage on my MSP...

in town i shift at 2100-2200 and on highway 2500, and i hold 5-10 mph under speed limit when cruising on free ways

I shift at 2-2.5k and It still doesnt get any better then 24-27 around town. Even accelerating slowly doesn't really seem to help reach that 300 mile mark per tank. I've seen 316 once after driving on the fuel light on for awhile becuas when I filled up i put in 12.5 gallons of gas!

I have been getting 32-34 MPGs lately, when I fill up at shell. Its mixed driving with some spirited runs in there. SS AFC FTW! When I fill up else where it drops to like 30mpg or less.

StealthWyvern, did you do a tune up on your P5 at all? I expect your MSP mileage is normal but on your P5... weird.

Wow, just wow, that really sucks. I can break 30 mpg without doing any of that and my P5 is turbocharged. What an inconvenience that must be. I've said this many times but I'm going to say it again - low RPM does not mean better fuel economy! It all depends on how much load is on the engine. Obviously continuous high-RPM driving isn't efficient either but there is a better middle ground. I usually shift between 3000-4000 RPM depending on what gear I'm in and I've found I get better gas mileage cruising around at 2500-3000 RPM than I do any lower or higher. Cruising around going 25 mph in 5th may seem like a good idea but when you have to really get on the throttle or downshift to accelerate any- that's where the MPG goes in the trash. There's a reason highway MPG are higher.

u can prolly get more. when i fill up i usually get between 12.7 to 13.6 gallons

Even when i replaced all plugs, wires, both coil packs, fuel filter, oil, and trans flush(all at once) I never got better then my normal 24-27mpg.

maybe but I dont expect to much more then what im getting around town.

Ha, and my mpg after the plug coil wire replacement came out pitiful 22.5 mpg...
Well, at least that was better than the 21 mpg before.
I think it also has something to do with the yokohama s.drive summer tire I recently put on there. So much grip, having side effect as well.

My parents took my 02.5 ES to Utah and back over te weekend (1500 miles round trip) and got a very high average.

I asked my dad to keep track of the mileage and he being Very OCD, created a trip log that I will post here when my wife gets back from work with the car.
The highest MPG for a tank was 38.9 MPG I believe.

Filled up again yesterday. 427 miles on the trip odo and I put in 12.8 gallons. That's just a hair over 33 mpg.

I'm keeping the rpms under 3500 when accelerating and doing the speed limit (65 mph).

70% of the driving on this tank was on the highway.

Miles per tank

2003 Protege 5
Most miles on a tank 480.1 Fill 14.37 gallons ( I always fill to the top of the tube).

Most gas in a fill up: 15.12 Gals.

325-350ish with the auto and a lead foot.

I average about 22-24mpg. I drive a combo of city and hwy.

i used to drive all city and filled up exactly 12Gallons each time and i avged 34mpg.
grannying it and keeping rpms under 2500 for each shift. that was summer tho.

winter mode i avg 370mpt filled up 12Gallons.
thats highway traveling 100miles a day at an avg of 70mph.

I drive about 95% city and have gotten 25-26mpg with a 5spd and a lead foot. I generally shift around 3-3.5k since that's what got me the best mpg in my old accord, so I have to retrain myself to keep it under 2.5k

on another note, how many people hate the short 5th gear we have?
