Mpi, the best? (best tuneing ecu

goku i called the only unichip dealer in dallas, thats what he told me for a full dyno tune. no time limit, so thats kinda nice i guess....

IMO you people don't seem to see the difference between a true EMS and piggy back systems. You are all grouping them into the same category/discussion. That is a mistake IMO. The original poster asked about piggy back systems

AEM--piggyback
MPI tuner (from what I gather)--piggy back
Unichip--piggy back

Haltech--standalone EMS

Bringing the haltech into the discussion is apples to oranges.
AEM is a full standalone. Can't wait for Beau to get it done. And to that guy who said PDaudio is kissing ass, WTF? Beau spends a lot of time making parts for the Protege community, and does a damn good job. Vendors like him, **********, Nick from MPI, and GHL motorsports deserve our props for how much time and effort they spend on here helping us in addition to selling us the parts we need.

I personally recommend purchase of the mpi tuner..for the cost & reliability. I have been to dyno event w/ mpi tuner on many proteges and other cars. And watch as nicked dyno tuned some of the cars..and watch as he played w/ a/f's to make best power..

I have used mpi tuner for close to 1 year...and have been able to boost at 12psi..and no detonation..nick has alwayz been there to help out w/ tuning..i used to constantly send datalogs and had him help me tune..

10times out of 10..the problems people had w/ mpi tuner not working properly was installation error..they all seemed to miss wires..and from what i heard..nick might be getting some plug & play going...but no idea on release dates..

The main reason why i was so interested in 1st place was b/c no cel's with mpi tuner..nj is PITA w/ inspection and CEL..they will fail you immedaitely. I recently went into inspection..and passed!

With AEM & Haltech they run parallel/stand alone..which will cause cel's.

no CEL's with Beau's plug and play AEM the way its wired the stock ECU wont think anything is wrong. trust me

Not sure how you guys are wiring your Haltech but in both my Miata and RX-7 it replaces the factory ECU completly. Is there something different about the MSP that requires you retain the factory ECU? I've never heard of such a thing with a Haltech install. In my RX-7 the engine wiring harness was completly removed. I have the E6X in the Miata and E6K in the RX-7. I also was under the impression that with the AEM the factory ECU remains.

If the factory ECU remains how can you call it a full standalone? A full standalone is just that......a whole new system with out any interaction of the factory ECU.

with the AEM (I cant speak for the Haltech) the stock ecu is left for pedestrian functions, as for the general user it is just too much to configure.

so, although the AEM is more than capable of handling all the functions, the stock ECU is left to handle the spedo, odometer, tach, etc.....

After doing a little bit of RESEARCH, I have come up with a solid explanation for the AEM EMS. Yes it is a standalone engine management system and for the most part from reviews I have read and the two persons cars who I have seen it perform on (1. 2g GSX) (2. TT Supra) it does seem to be the best investment in the long run.

The AEM Plug in Play-
Each EMS part number has been designed with a specific car in mind, meaning it will plug in exactly the same as the factory computer it replaces. It uses no adapter loom or external jumper harness. It has been built with the same plug that your factory ECU came with.

This user-programmable system plugs directly into a vehicles factory ECU harness and requires no additional wiring or hardware. (Some adapting hardware may be required for non-factory forced induction vehicles.)
The AEM EMSs infinitely adjustable software allows you to program virtually any combination of engine control, power adders and auxiliary devices, and accurately deliver proper amounts of fuel and correct ignition timing for ANY boost level or operating condition.

So there is about a wrap on the AEM EMS! (stooges)

Has anyone contaced Beau, or heard the progress on the AEM ? I do not know the problems with this stuff......what is the big "wall" he is trying to get over with our cars? Thanks.

he's almost there, I talked with him about it for an hour or so on monday (iirc)

everything is pretty much done, its just making the jumper harness that has to be completed. Just so everyone doesn't get scared when they hear the price Beau is throwning a LOT of extra capabilities into this system than just the EMS itself. I'll leave everything up to him to reveal though, because I dont want to give away company secrets and whatnot in this day and age.

I don't really understand these cars either. Most likey, I am thinking it is the wall that prevents the SAFC or SAFC II from working on our cars. It doesn't read in watts like it is supposed to, instead it reads in volts?

What reads in watts LOL? You are somewhat correct. The hard part about getting any of these to work is compatibility of signals. If a sensor reads 0-5V and the unit is expecting a 0-10V signal (for example), it will not read correctly. There is a lot that goes into making it work, let alone wiring everything up so it is plug-and-play. Props to Beau's electrician when he gets it done.

EMS is a very very good system, I've personally used it on my frankenstein DSM, but if you dont have a lot of tuning experience or preset maps to go off of, it can be the worst purchase you ever make...on the safc note, the reason it doesnt work on our cars isnt voltage, its the actual current.....

The MPI works. If Nick can expand the resolution higher to a 16x16 or higher, it will be a really powerful tuning tool.

sam says this after tuning my car... speakin of which sam, i called nick and we know what the problem is... we gotta go tune man. cept i work now so it'll have to be like after 10 some night. call me

i am looking to tune my car soon, i have a avc-r, but i want to mess with the timing as well, also i want something i can take to any dyno shop and have them tune it, what unit will allow for that
