Took my car on the second road rally this year. First one was a fun event, and wasn't scored on timing or driving. This one was a time/speed event. I had never done it before, so I was just out to have fun. Problem is that I am me, and I don't like to do anything half-assed, so I wanted to win!
Anyway, about 90% of the race was on back country roads with no traffic, the other part was just transition roads to get to the back roads. The problem I had was I hate driving on gravel, and about 8 miles of the 57 mile course was gravel.
Anyway, with my speed guesstimations and our wristwatch timing calculations, we took second place in the novice class (out of 5) in our first event. All of the other drivers had done it before, and last years national champ was at the event in a fully computerized Porsche. Didn't feel bad being beat by something like that.
Only missed 2 directions over the entire course, and had 1 major error costing us over 5 minutes. Nobody told us we could buy time until the day was over, so we could have won had we known about it earlier.
No biggie though, we'll be back and ready to take them on again soon!
Anybody else tried this yet?
