MP3 JDM engine swap Grounding problem??? HELP

I have just installed a JDM engine into a customer's Mazda Protege3 and when i went to start the engine after switching intake manifold and harness and etc all back together, when i connect the battery terminals and crank the key, all i get is a click and the terminals get hot.

This tells me there is a grounding problem somewhere. I have all of the grounds connected and i have even added a few grounds to try to figure this out.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Im really just trying to get this guy his car back and i have spent days going through the harness and etc.

What is a Mazda Protege 3? That's not what "MP3" stands for...

Assuming this is a Protege we are talking about, did you use the JDM crank pulley or a USDM pulley? If it's the former, then that is your problem. Switch it out and you should be able to crank over the engine.

The JDM crank pulley (which sorta looks like a saw blade) is different from the USDM pulley (which looks like a cog) and you won't be able to start the engine as the signal from the crank position sensor won't be correct with that pulley.

FYI: MP3 stands for the fact that this was the first car with a factory installed MP3 capable deck. Kinda corny, I know...

I thought when a CKPS was bad or off, it does not allow spark or fuel in some cases.

My issue is that the starter just clicks. Nothing cranks over. The battery terminals are getting hot.

And wow. Thats kind of not what i was expecting for why it is called an MP3.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure about all the rest, but yes I have an idea: check that crank pulley! There's no use in trying anything else before you check that. I'm not saying the crank position sensor is bad, I'm saying it's not compatible with the crank pulley the JDM engine came with.

I have to change it anyways but i want to get the starter to do more than click.

When a CKP is bad itll allow the starter to crank the car it just wont start.

With the terminals getting hot I would look for a short. Is there a chance the start wire and a ground got mixed up?

I just spent all morning going through this car AND alll of the wires are connected where they are supposed to be. I downloaded an electricaL diagram and the grounds seem to be ok. As i hold the key the start clicks once but the battery terminal will smoke. Any ideas? I know its a grounding issue. Almost like i have a hot wire connected to a grounding spot.

I decided to hold the key and see if the bad wire wud smoke. Noticed smoke coming from the passenger side engine mount ground. Disconnected that and held the key again and the grounds on the head near the coolant temp sensor started to get hot now.? Lost completely.
