Any luck out there with taking out the OEM CD deck and putting an aftermarket one? I know there will be some empty space below. I have seen a used P5 with an aftermarket one, and it looked ok. Will I have problems if I take this to be done at your average electronics store chain?

TONS have done this...I recomend using the DIN Delete panel when done over the radio pocket though...

Go to Crutchfield.com , you get the harness & dash kit and full instructions for free. Install is easy to do yourself.

I personally am a fan of the MSP radio pocket. It looks great (much better than the scosche pocket my car came with that rattled all the time) and it's a handy storage compartment. GL with the components and install.

^^^ Yeah, but it's also a lote more expensive. And my trim kit/pocket doesn't rattle. ^^^

If you're buying a new deck I'd highly recommend getting one with a USB input. Being able to play your music off of a thumb drive is amazing.

I just got the Alpine 9884 for my 2003 P5....Full Speed Ipod Interface (can browse the Ipod on the screen of the deck) :) i love it. Used a scosche fit kit with no issues...ran the Ipod cord into the glove box...picked up a older ipod...20 gb 4th generation for like 60 bucks....no more radio for me :)

if you have the funky, but cool, P5 subwoofer in the spare tire...the wiring harness allows the subwoofer to still be used :)

Thanks all for the advice. I will look into more detail, a JVC KD-R400 MP3 deck with USB and aux input for my Ipod. 149.CAN$. I like the clean lines of the OEM deck, but not even to play CDRs is a real pain. I also find the display hard to read during the day if I'm wearing my sunglasses.

The so called "MSP radio pocket" is by far the best option for filling in the empty din slot. It is stupidly expensive from the dealer, don't even ask. Pay a visit to the "self serve" section of your local junkyard. With any luck, you can pull one out of a 1999-2001 Protege for like 5 bucks. You'll then only need to buy the support bar (around 15 bucks if I remember correctly) from the dealer.

Good luck.

Here's my setup...

When I bought my P5 I asked the used car dealer if they could remove the factory deck for me before I even took delivery. I had the wire harness all done up for my Pioneer MP3 deck and installed it right in the Futureshop parking lot after I bought the mounting bracket.

I got the pocket style which, if I remember correctly, just clips in without any bolts or anything. I put it in with the pocket on the bottom and the deck on top, which I didn't like, and reversed it with the deck on the bottom and have run it like that for nearly 3 years now.

I'm not a fan of what most other companies sell and have bought nothing but Pioneer for a long time and they've all been great. My last ones ribbon cable (flip down face) broke from repeated flexing, but I ordered the part, soldered it in, and it continued to work fine. No skipping or anything.

Newest one, which is still 3 years old, is still going strong. It's gone through the hottest days of summer and the coldest days of winter (-30c/-22f and below) without problems. The only time it's ever acted weird was when the volume dial wouldn't work, but I removed the face plate like I do every day, ran my finger over the metal contacts where the face plate touches, and that fixed it. Must have been some dirt or condensation on the contacts.

My brother has a Pioneer with Ipod interface for his car that he loves.

I just picked up my pocket and harrness from futureshop I think in total was $30. I use nothing but JVC decks and have for years still running a 7+ year old one in the van. Still plays disks flawlessly. To give you an idea of just how old the deck is the big selling feature on it was it was able to play CD-R and CD-RW.

That looks like the same pocket I got from Futureshop. I just remembered what my only complaint about it is...the pocket height is small enough that I can only fit my hand in it up to the knuckle. That means when any small objects that are put in there slide to the rear and I need a pen or some other long object to fish them out :P

I just don't use the pocket except for receipts and other paper junk.

^that's my setup as well except I have a Kenwood unit.

The MSP pocket is OEM and thus look much more pro than the futureshop pockets IMO. It's bigger too.

Update

I have picked up a JVC KD-R600 from BestBuy for $129CAN, with tax parts and install it totals $258. I will get it put in on Feb 23rd, it looks like a nice deck, multi color display and has the USB and AUX jack. They had another JVC for $149 also with USB but no slide to cover the port when not in use. I thought it's better to have it covered to keep out dust etc.
