Moving to NoVA, where to live, commute?

I noticed there are few folks who live in North Virginia. I am moving out there and will work on Bolling AFB for about a year. I am looking at living in Springfield, Kingstowne, Alexandria, and maybe Burke areas. I am actually getting my MS3 8.5 delivered to Brown Mazda in Alexandria in July. My question is what type of commute am I looking at in my new MS3 going east of the WW bridge.

Any other issues with those areas?

Bridge traffic sucks but may be getting better esp. once the new one is built. Other than that, no problems. Those are all good areas. Come check out the MEC forum, most of us live in NoVA.

Buy a house as far north as you can afford. I used to commute a few days a week from Fredericksburg to DC (Wash/Navy yard). I'd sooner push my balls through a sausage grinder than make that drive again. If you can stay north, it's not nearly as bad. As mentioned, bridge traffic = poo

Hope you're ready to pay out the nose for housing. I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic about it. To live in Northern VA is very expensive from what I understand.

certainly. Half a mil doesn't get much of a house. My house in Stafford books @ 300k and it's a postage stamp. It would easily be close to twice that 40 miles up.

But then you have to live in PG County or Howard, which is just as expensive as NoVA.

Go to Google Maps. Get to Bolling and look in the surrounding area. Look at the country AND back roads to get to the base. AVOID the Interstate as much as possible!!!

Thanks for the info all. To answer some of the questions: I want to live in Virginia for the schools and neighborhoods mostly. I have a youngin I can handle a 45-1hr commute for a year I hope. Plus I heard areas near Bolling, such as Anacostia are ugly crime/poverty. I also hear areas south of the beltway in MA such as Fort Washington and down to Waldorf are increasingly having crime and gang issues. I would rather avoid that if possible. I can afford a single family home in NoVA, but just barely. I may look at townhouses to save some money. It is crazy expensive and that is coming from someone who is used to the damn Euro rate over here!

aaaannd today is the perfect example why if you can avoid it, DO NOT cross the bridge to go to work!!!

all overpasses/bridges in or around the 395/495/95 'mixing bowl' have been closed due to severe icing, traffic is backed up everywhere.

stay on same side of the bridge!

move further up into Harford County if you want a better environment for the kids
