2003 Mazdaspeed protege
Hey all, this is my first post here on mazdas247........well my situation is like this, ive always had hondas and my latest creation was sadly stolen from my wk place which is homedepot and i work overnight freight....so im looking for a vehicle and come across this 03 mazdaspeed protege that only has 43,xxx miles on it for $6000, its bone stock and in great shape, but i did notice some oil on the head above the exhaust manifold like residule looking so im assuming its the valve cover gasket but i want to put in hardpipes and a blow off valve and was wondering if their easy write ups with pics, im tryn to do as much research but im in the middle of a move right now and a new baby so things are kinda heck tech, excited to c how this comes out guys so hit me up, oh i live in Hilo, Hawaii fiy......mahalos

First off, welcome to a great forum, all I know about the MSP and turbos I pretty much learned here. There are lots of very knowledgeable people on here. Now, the oil is probably from the valve cover gasket as you said now the bov valve, I hear, has to be re-circulated unless you relocate the maf. If you don't the car stalls out. I don't know how soon you are looking to get hard pipes but I have some with a injen cai, greddy rz bov, re-circulated that I have run since mid 09 no problems black powder-coated. I'm preparing for a lot more power so I'm switching to fmic but I won't be finished until later, like Oct. Let me know.

With that mileage I would buy it whether or not I could afford it, you could make money on that deal. It probably needs new valve cover and exhaust manifold gaskets. Check out the how-to section there are plenty of write ups including and FMIC writeup.

Welcome to m247! Enjoy your stay. Feel free to ask me anything about the MSP, I'll give you the answer or direct you to who knows it.

looks like they kept the interior pretty clean, congrats. prepare to spend hours sifting through bad information. there are some gems still hidden around here though.

Welcome to the party, that unfortunately is winding down. Sounds like you found a great deal, makes me scared to think about selling mine.

As for the oil, a picture is worth a thousand words. My valve cover is fine after 72k miles, but the oil cap isn't the tightest seal. Also, it could actually be exhaust coming from a broken or lose manifold, which is incredibly common with these cars. Get rid of the stock manifold bolts ASAP; get studs, and tighten them down with the proper torque specs in the proper order (there's a sticky in this forum). The studs are outrageously priced, but if it saves you from ever having to take the entire front half of the engine bay out to extract broken bolts, it's money well spent.
