Modifying the shift handle for looks

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of getting a new shift knob...I don't like the way my hand sometimes slides off on the 2-3 shift. That being said, I'm a huge fan of the American Muscle Style of showing the shift handle with a round knob on top. That being said, I see our shifter has that molded in plate that the shift boot sits on top of. Does this serve a purpose? I'm wondering if it's part of the downward push needed to get into reverse? I was thinking about dremeling the round plate off and going from there...maybe even fabbing up a Hurst Chrome stick with a white 6 speed knob? Just want to make sure I don't ruin the reverse function...also, I understand the shifter prolly wouldn't do too well with dust and debris but I could make sure the boot prevents that. Any thoughts on this?

The top plate only holds the shift boot up, the spring that controls the reverse lockout is the bottom plate.

I bet that Redline motorsports ( a forum sponsor) can fab up a new shift boot that would work with your idea.
