Modding a 1.6l even worth it ?

Honestly is it really worth modding a Mazda protege DX 1.6l AUTOMATIC ? I mean doesnt it only have 105 hp stock and it is my first car and i know im stuck with it but i just wish to give it a little more power (cabpatch)

1st thing on my list is an intake most likely a weaponr dragon intake.

So any opnions ? you think its worth modding ? and if you do agree it is after an intake what else should i get that could fit a budget

yea the weapon r intake, obx header. light pullys, and some cams should do the trick!!!

No, it's not. Take it from someone that's been down this route with the bigger 1.8L... you're *going* just waste your money. With I/H/E, 626 manifold and a very well running engine I made 98Whp/96ft/lbs from my 1.8L FP slushbox. MSP's are *extremely* cheap these days, and the 2.0L later generation protege's follow the same route (if you still want to stay in a protege) save your cash, and upgrade later.


If you want to mod it, do the ones that will increase resale (ie good maintenance, fixing anything that's broken, *maybe* a nice stereo in-dash GPS)

No...I put an msp exhaust on mine, and got rid of the plumbing forward of the air box, it didnt make any difference, but above 4000 rpm, in a tunnel it sounds like its cool.
Hopefully I'll crash the car, and then i can put the engine in a go kart

Not worth it, The only thing I've been meaning to get around to in terms of mods is installing the taller 5th gear for better gas mileage

lol worth it? no. fun to experience working on your own car? yes. I have had the 1.6 and the 1.8 now and i can say the 1.8 is much more fun to drive, but still slow as balls. I mean i have intake and exhaust and i ran a 16.8 1/4 mile time. That is pathetic. However my car is a blast to drive on the back roads. However, I will be ditching the 1.8 soon enough for the 2.5 mmmmm.

Yeh i know exactly what you mean haha, it is fun working on your own car. Once i fix my solenoid problem i just might go with some bolt on mods only. Nothing to crazy

Well unless your gonna go turbo, i would say no. If you are going turbo then hell yes, and the at trans is hella fun on the highway. im running twelve psi on my 1.6 at and im loving every minute of it

U got a Automatic or manual ? and is it on a stock engine or did you buy forged internals ?

is it worth it...probably not. but its your money do what you want with it. everyone on here that has modified there protege has technically wasted money if you want a fast car. but if you want a more fun to drive car and spend it on this one so be it. ive got mods on mine and its still slow as balls. ive got a turbo kit waiting to go in. was it a smart move...no lol. but i did it and im gonna enjoy it. i know im not gonna be out killing wrx's and evo's. but i like the car so who cares. if i want a fast car ill go buy something fast out the box.

its varied so far. i picked the kit up used for a decent price. its a basic low boost setup though. but ive added and am upgrading components here and there. id say all and all im over a 1000 invested into it easily. would have to add it all up but then id probably be depressed. ive snagged a few good deals from people selling on here though. i just need to get it installed one day lol

I did the same thing to the plumbing before the air box on my Protege as well (thinking it would allow more air to go into the engine) and didn't notice a difference. However today I got to thinking while I was working on the car. I don't think Mazda would have put that piece on there for nothing, and I've checked to see how much air was being pulled into the engine which wasn't much (at idle). My main thought though was this: Could that plumbing be there to catch air while you're driving to give the engine more air? If so then not only would there be more air coming in but the air would probably be cooler than it would if you had the plumbing off. Just a thought I had and hopefully I've explained it well.
