mobil1 (not avg oil thread)

PLEASE do not buy SuperTech oil! we use it as a generic substitute in cars where people don't want to spend the extra $4 for Pennzoil. if you could see the oil and hear the engines when these cars come back for the next oil change with SuperTech, you would'nt want to use it either.

on the other hand, Valvoline has been advertising that their new SynPower offers 4x better wear protection than Mobil1, and info or oppinions on that?

Have some in now. This is the 2nd time I've used it. With 71K my engine is as sound and smoke free as its been since it was purchased new. Usually use Mobil 1.

Suspect the condition of the oil that you have seen has more to do with what its in versus the container it came out of.

good point. maybe the synthetic SuperTech is a LOT better than the conventional also? i know that personally i don't like the results i've seen from SuperTech. and that's basically what it comes down to when you choose an oil, personal preference.

Google it and read what they say about it on bobtheoilguys website. The only negative was for extreme extended usuage which is not an issue for me. Used oil analysis is really the only way to see what your oil is doing or not doing. $20 well spent

Royal Purple is also some amazing stuff....I've seen the highest HP numbers from Royal Purple on my buddies "Oil Dyno Test" session.

But Mobil 1 has been around forever, especially in racing circles. And when the oil cap on my $15k dollar hand built, dry sump LS7 engine states specifically, "Use ONLY Mobil1 5w30".....I listen. GM is backing this expensive motor with full warranties, so I'm sure they've done their oil research.

So it's good enough for me and my MS3 as well! Plus usually it's readily available for cheap at Costco! (drinks)

i agree on your statement about makes/models with "mobil 1 only" stickers, from vettes to porsche, whatever. unfortunatly my oil is due and there is no mobil 1 to be had. got some penzoil platinum instead, maybe mobil 1 will be back on the shelves after this 3000miles is up

I change my oil every 5k eff that 3,000 stuff. Look in your manual...plus you're using synthetic.

exactly.

If you're running fully synthetic and changing it at 3k then you have some play room for situations like this

well, the term "some" could be construed many ways. look at the factory intervals for this car, and that is with regular ol' dino oil. under normal driving circumstances, they recommend about 6k. harsh driving, 3k. and again that is with dino oil....

OP, you will be JUST fine for alot more than 3k, so waiting it out might be ideal. it's up to you of course.

FWIW, i go 7500 with my redline oil ; )

this brings up an interesting topic. what will GM do in a situation like this where Mobil1 is not so readily available? will they still void the warranty if they find that you are using another brand of oil? will they void the warranty in the first place because of this?

do the warranties for these vehicles noted specifically say that coverage hinges on exclusive use of mobil 1, or do they only recommend mobil 1?

The manual says 3,000 miles.

the manual says oil change every 3k miles if you live in mexico and go by schedule2 maintenence. in the usa, canada, and puerto rico it's every 5k miles under schedule2.

i definitly go by schedule2 maintenence but i go by every 3k miles as a standard myself because that's just what i was taught growing up and that really doesn't hurt anything. and really, no matter how long your oil is supposed to last, don't forget the filter is a big part of it too. had a lady with a bmw (who swore by it's garaunteed 10k mile or whatever oil change interval) whose filter crumbled in my hands as i tried to take it out. and that was a top mount cartridge, so some went into either the return or pump hole, which i had to try to get out all the pieces

and that is a very interesting idea. im sure that dealers with those vehicles have some sort of major stock on those oils, and how many of those owners DON'T go to the dealer for their maintenence requirements? i'd say a very very very small number don't

mercedes are notoriously difficult vehicles to do anything with, unless you are a mercedes technician. i've seen stickers on the engine that say to use mercedes aproved lubricants or it can void manufacturer waranty.

pains in the ass to do oil changes on, too.

I figure that if you stick to a good name brand synthetic and change the oil and filter when recomended you will be just fine.

Be glad that you dont have to pay 9 bucks a qt for Castrol 10w-60. That is the only oil BMW recomends for our M coupe...got to go to the stealer for that. UGH!!!

If you are worried about this let them change it until M1 is available. You will also get to see what they use as a replacement. At least you will have that elusive record that us DIY oil changes try to keep for proof.

Mobil 1 is readily available at Sam's and Costco here. Sam's has 10W-30 for $32.25/box of six quarts. Costco has 5W-and 10W-30 at about $34

Might be time for the BS flag... Plenty in stock at my nearby Wally World. All sortsa viscosities.
