Mitsubishi let fly with its first round of press shots of its new Lancer, a car the company hopes will revive its sagging fortunes like a Cialis-spiked meatloaf at the St. Raymond's Home for the Aged. Based on the Concept X unveiled at the 2005 Tokyo motor show, the new Lancer is larger than its predecessor and shares an architecture with its Outlander SUV sibling, as well as the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass -- the product of a joint venture between Mitsubishi and its former benefactor. A new 2.0-liter, 152 hp MIVEC four will provide power, while a standard five-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed SportronicR CVT transmission with paddle shifters (in some trim levels) provide swappage. It'll also form the basis for the latest turbofied Evo X, which will get a new active-braking system and about a billion horsepower. We'll see the wraps come off at the Detroit show next month.

A definite improvement over the last generation.

I still don't think I'd buy one despite the improved looks.

Same here.... however I am really interested in the next Evo after talking to my local stealership... it is going to be a force to be reckoned with. By the time it is out I may be ready to retire the MSP or keep it as a project car.

opps....hit the wrong button. Sorry about that msp35. hehe...I need my coffee.

After reading many different reviews on the styling, it's outcome looks bleak.

"Although Mitsu is raving about the Lancer's 'dynamic lines' and 'iconic face', we can't help feeling a little underwhelmed - especially when comparing it to the Concept-X sketches and model seen previously."
-Top Gear

Keep in mind that this is a base model run of the mill Lancer, the EVO will be different in many ways. Consider other cars, the normal Skylines where boring compared to the GTR, the Impreza RS vs the STi, the current EVO vs the normal Lancer or any other similar comparison. Not to say the new EVO will looks worlds different, but I'm sure it will look much better than these pics of a normal persons Lancer.

@ work so I can only see the picture of the rear (which does look mean).

one question though.... how the hell does a CVT have speeds? I thought the point of a CVT was to provide a transmission that doesnt "shift" and stays in the optimum torque range because of its variable gear ratios?

can't wait to see the evo version. This is much better then the older one. Any interior shots out there because that is what kills the mitsu for me.

anyone else see the Mazda6 sedan lines in this car? Specially the rear end shots of the one with the skirts on it?

Yup. I definatly see Mazda 6 lines in there. Looks good for what it is IMO. Needs to be lowered. And that Motor is WEAK! But overall it's not a bad looking car.

Looks like a combination of a Mazda3 and Acura TL. Looks better then the 07 Nissan Sentra. I really like the new Lancer. I'm so glad the Altima hadlamps are gone and that it does not look like a Galant.

I like the sport package car.

I keep seeing this thread pop up and everytime I see it, I think it says "Mitsubishi Recalls 2008 Lancer."

I have a feeling that one isn't too far off.

I see alot of Alfa Romeo in that car, and a little of the previous gen Evo in there as well. Not a fan though.
