Missing plastic piece = hydrolock!?!?!?!

I was talking to a friend of mine today who's a mechanic, does regular maintenance, but performance isn't really his thing. Showed him my new turboxs 50/50. Since I had taken off the cover next to the airbox, he claims that I will end up sucking water when it rains. I was just gonna do the small airbox mod and remove the snorkle all together. Problem with that way too? (I don't think there will be a problem, just tying to cover my back)

Does anyone have any validity to this claim???????

your not going to hydrolock unless you angered the God and he decides to cover the world in water again. you wont get enough water through that hole to hydrolock, itll just vaporize.

yes water will might go through the grille, and a couple drops might end up down the snorkel, but im 100% sure your good from hydrolocking

Hydrolocking occurs when you get water into the cylinders. Water doesn't compress, the cylinders go up and press back on the rods, and snap, bend, bad.

The tricky part is getting water TO the cylinder...

It's gotta go in the intake, through the maf straightener, through all the twist and turns, through a hot steamy turbo, through the intercooler, through the throttlebody, through the intake manifold, the valvetrain, and finally into the cylinders.

ie you need ALOT of water at once to hydrolock. Any small amount will do nothing but steam clean your engine. Heck they ever sell water injection kits! Think on that one for a minute!

And if you are REALLY worried about it, you can drill a small hole in the lowest point of that snorkel and that will let any water that may collect, run out.

The stock airbox sits too high to worry about hydrolock. Now if you bury the front of the car in about 3 feet of water, then you have something to worry about.

Your mechanic friend is obviously pretty vague if he thinks it will cause hydrolock. You would have to be driving in 3 feet of water.................

I figured that it would be fine, just wanted to hear what everyones thoughts were. If that could suck up enough water to cause an issue, than everyone with SRIs would be having trouble by now. Thanks all!

Also always remember...standing water across a road way...you should really turn around and find another way. Standing water across a road can signify an approaching flash flood. Either coming or passed..and if its passed, the road can be damaged, and the water could be much deeper then it appears.

If you don't want to turn around and are impatient, wait for someone else to try and cross and get ready to call 911.

If I remember correctly, the air box has a few small holes in the bottom.
