Misfire problem diagnosed!

Are you talking about the Faq in your sig?

How is anyone supposed to know that? It does seem helpful though.

Anyway
POOR DRIVEABILITY (INJECTOR SPRAY PATTERN)
If a vehicle has rough idle, poor acceleration on aggressive driving, or
other driveability concerns, the injectors may have an incorrect spray
pattern. The pattern should be a cone shaped mist. If there are
streams or drops of fuel, then driveability problems could result. An
injector volume check and leakage test should also be done when testing
for spray pattern. Follow the procedures in the Workshop Manual.

Will check the rest out.

In post #72 & 76 at the top of this pg the link letters are blue. They are underlined when placing cursor on it. This means click it, read, find answer. Confused about the confusion. I will agree about the presentation of the answers needing to be all nicelike for hypersensitive folks tho.

You wouldn't know unless you saw him post. They are not posted in a FAQ thread on this site.

OK, point taken but......people starting threads with questions about help should see who posts responses in their thread & probably read thoroughly & comprehensively if they are really looking for answers & that part was right there to be had in a couple of places is all I'm gettin at. Anyway...hope the OP has gleened helpful info, that's what it's all about.

Stop being an ass. You didn't post a link and if you are meaning http://protege5.ugly.net/ it doesn't work.
why do I need to post a link? it's always there with my sigs
it's not my fault you people can't or don't want to read
fuel filter information is clearly in the faq

if I wanted to be a real asshole, I could've said nothing or simply say "stfu and read the faq" like I've done back in the old days

I can't help it if you're a n00b
I'm one of the few old school guys still around and I'm known as either both the biggest asshole or the saint... depends on how I rubbed on people... I don't bulls*** around nor do I take bulls***... and I plain do not care what people think of me... I have made plenty of mazda friends myself by just the way I am and I have gained much knowledge from them as they have from me... I never claimed to know everything, although many attempted to pin me as that way

the "faq" on this site were attempts of others to make something better than what mine is, which has been far longer established than anything protege related out there... I have nothing against people trying to make their own and make it better... that's what makes this a free country... but to deny or ignore the existence of the established one is only denying benefit to the whole community... there is always an open invitation of "link not copy" written clearly on my site, but the powers that be here chose not to do so... it doesn't hurt my feelings that hasn't been done, nor do I lose sleep people not getting good information because its not widely promoted by members on this site

call my faq, ugly, old, hard to read, outdated... I know and I don't really care... I maintain it on my own time and on money and making major changes such as a redesign is very hard to do when it is megs and megs of text... information is slow to get on there either because I don't have time or because it hasn't been verified/proven... I take a very conservative approach, which is why it has been successful because of ACCURACY... I admit there are mistakes here and there, and they have been corrected... if I just add s*** in there before making sure it is good information, it would be more work for me, and lots of people wasted money (and time, and a lot of pissed off people)... the faq is never meant to replace the forums but merely supplement it... the forums is where the "blazing new" is... people try/do s*** on here and fail many times... but the few who are successful sometimes have their information added to the faq when warranted... I tend not to add overly complicated or advanced information other than touching the basics or obscure information... the rest is for the reader to figure it out on the forums
so NEVER be shy to contribute or correct what is in it... the community only benefits because there are changes done to it!

Problem solved without the FAQ.

Turns out it was a missed item. The intake tube had a hole in it. I must have missed it when changing the EGR valve. The only reason I found it was because the engine actually backfired through it. I then pulled on the tube to expose a gaping hole. Once I pulled the intake off it wasn't really noticeable until I pulled it some more and eventually pulled it completely in to two halves. Every crevice was dry rotted and cracked. This may be happening to others with the stock intake. I suppose it's time to buy a CAI.

I still might do the other filter. I will run it for a week or so and see how it feels from there. I wrapped tv tube with a roll of 130c and then a roll of super88. I figure I have a week with this patch before I need to repatch or replace. Hopefully it will be replace.

Marc, this is GREAT!!!! I have a check engine light even after the EGR Valve and the plugs were replaced. It passed emissions with no problem. I have an oil change scheduled with the Mazda dealer and I'll be bringing a copy of this with me to show him how to do it.

I have a misfire in cylinder 3. Might just have to do this when I get on e so I don't have a s*** ton of gas pouring out on me. Nice write up even tho it's 6 years old lol veryyy helpful as long as it fixes my misfire :)

Mine just started the random misfire at 166,000 miles. The weird thing is that I had my 100k service completed at 150K and the mechanic said he could not get to the fuel filter to change it. That seemed odd, but the way I see it, if the mechanic doesn't know how to change a fuel filter, I probably don't want to be his first victim. Your easy to use directions and pictures will help when I can slow down enough to pull it and clean it. Mine hesitates only at idle...very randomly...and when I accelerate after downshifting. It clears up in about 2 seconds, but has been driving me crazy. I have cleaned and regapped the plugs and changed the plug wires, but that didn't stop the hesitation, just slowed it's frequency. As you stated, I wasn't even really thinking of the fuel filter as the problem, but my symptoms match yours. Seems like cleaning a filter is probably less than working my way through changing out the electrical system. Thanks for the post.
